Smart Errors on boot ssd

Did you use this SSD in another system, with more than one partitions?
Because, if youdid, it is possible, that only that partition is worn out.
(Once I used 2x Samsung 470, 64GB SSDs in a Ubuntu syste, using a 2x 8GB mirrored partition as the ZIL for the ZFS array.
That part has worn out in like 1-2 years and made the SSDs toast. )

I thought the firmware was MEANT to distribute writes across all cells

That is most definitely the case for newer controllers but I have no idea if that was already a standard feature 15 years ago in Samsung 470 drives which were mentioned here.

Hello,

i got this error in the TrueNAS GUI a few days ago:

I got an email from truenas this night with following text:

ZFS has finished a scrub:

Has the new ssd again a problem?

This is the replaced boot device?
It would be very unfortunate (and unlikely if bought new) that you’ve got a second bad boot device so quickly.

Could you provide the smartctl output?

It might just be a bad cable connection.

Or a bad cable at this rate…

This is not the same problem you had before. This is a ZFS error, not the drive telling you it is dying.

As @essinghigh said, it could be a bad data cable (that is the best outcome for a hardware repair) and you should post the results of the smartctl output.

Did you just upgrade TrueNAS? Did you reboot or power off/on the system recently? I’m looking at things that may cause a ZFS READ error.

You should run a Scrub on the boot pool, if it comes back looking the same (no known data errors) then you will need to clear the error zpool clear boot-pool and once done, run another scrub. Should not take long on a boot-pool. And then watch ro the problem to come back and see if you can identify what might have caused it.

You may want to replace the data cable (unless this is a NVMe) regardless.
