Smart test aborted and Truenas shows as unhealthy pool

Hello for context I have never had a drive fail and am not sure what I am looking at/for with SMART tests.

I was woken up early in the morning to some emails from my Truenas Scale saying that one of my 2 year old drives had a bunch of errors below are the alerts I got:

  • Device: /dev/sdg [SAT], not capable of SMART self-check.
  • Device: /dev/sdg [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data.
  • Device: /dev/sdg [SAT], Read SMART Self-Test Log Failed.
  • Device: /dev/sdg [SAT], Read SMART Error Log Failed.

I have since run a extended offline test on the drive and it says completed without error. My Truenas UI still has the alerts active and the device said the status of the disk (sdg) was failed until I offlined then reonlined the disk.

I am not sure if this is something I should be worried about I have bought a spare disk and am prepared to do a swap but I know the disk will still be under warranty (unsure if this would be warranty worthy)

I did a # smartctl -a /dev/sdg and this was my output I am not sure what I am looking at and would appreciate some if any guidance. My questions is should I replace this drive?

root@truenas[~]# smartctl -a /dev/sdg

Which version of TrueNAS? That would be helpful.
Have you powered off the machine, waited about 5 to 10 seconds, then powered back on to see if the problem still exists?

The only thing I see of any concern about the drive are the Hardware ECC corrections, it is rather high. The seek error rate could be an issue but I didn’t to the math to subtract “FFFF” from the value to see what the true errors are.

Best of luck, headed into work.

Which is a PCIe3x2 with ASM1166

PCIe Gen3 x2 with ASMedia ASM1166 SATA host controller (AHCI)
Compliant with AHCI Specification Rev. 1.4
Support six SATA Gen3 (6Gbps) ports
Support SATA port multiplier command based switching
Support device sleep power management

Its not a proper HBA device and may be at leats part of the cause here

I feel like an idiot, rebooting should have been my go to first step, it cleared those alerts. I still don’t know what to look out for/when I should be looking to replace a drive. Should it be wait until the drive actually dies?

Also my truenas version is Dragonfish-24.04.1.1 and the other factor is I upgraded from a data card to a hba Supermicro 9300-8I

Yea I did swap it out to a Supermicro 9300-8I about 3 months ago and tossed the sata board I just forgot to update my build signature.

Well that is easy, sort of. I will summarize it however if in doubt, ask the forum.

These are the key indicators:

  1. Long/Extended/Short self-tests not completing, no errors.
  2. ID 5, 197, 198, 199, 200 higher than zero is notable, if the value is double digits, it is a problem and if it is incrementing that is a HUGE warning to backup your data (depends on your redundancy) and replace the drive, with the possible exception of ID 200 which may go up and might be fine. It is a hit and miss it seems.
  3. ID 194 Temperature too high. I high value here doesn’t mean disaster, but it could mean you have voided your warranty and that you may feel some premature failures.

I recommend you test your drives this way:
Short test = Daily
Long Test = Weekly

I have an updated Hard Drive Troubleshooting Guide I’m in the middle of updating to include NVMe drives. Once complete I will post it as a resource. An old one is there now which may help you.
