SMB Share - Execute Permissions

When I extract a ZIP from Windows by default it does not have execute perms. I have to SSH in and chmod or change the perms from within Windows.

What can I do to change this? Thanks

yeah windows zip extract usually lands files without the unix execute bit, and smb just mirrors that. in my experience the clean fix is an ACL/mask on the share so new files get +x if you actually need it.

on SCALE id look at:

  • Dataset ACL → add an ACL entry for your group with Execute, and check “Apply permissions recursively” only if you mean it
    • Share Advanced → Auxiliary Parameters: something like create mask = 0775 and directory mask = 0775 (or force create mode = 0111 if you specifically want execute on files)
    • if its only for scripts/binaries, a periodic find /mnt/pool/dataset -type f -name '*.sh' -exec chmod +x {} + via a cron/Init script is what a lot of people end up doing instead of forcing +x on every random file
forcing execute on all new files can be messy for security, so id only do the mask if you really need it. might be enough to chmod the few tools you care about. shrug

I fixed this (i think!) almost immediately after posting. I set the ACL to full control for my user and it seems to have fixed. I think the create mask was already set but if I have issues in future I will try that.

Thanks!
