Some clients are server, others do not. Ideas?

I’ve set up a storage server for my boss’s art studio using TrueNAS Scale 24.04. It has a single SMB share and one user. It has been running well for a few months. Unfortunately, two of the systems (so far) on the network aren’t able to see files on the share. I have no ideas left of what might be causing the issue. Only thing they have in common is that they are old macs, but other old macs on the network work fine.

  • Main PC running Win11 24H2 connects just fine
  • My personal laptop, Thinkpad T420 running Linux Mint 21.1 connects just fine
  • MacBook Pro (2015) running macOS 12.7.6 Monterey connects just fine
  • Mac Pro (2008) running OSX 10.6 connects to the server, sees the share, but no files in the share
  • Mac Pro (2009) running OSX 10.9 connects just fine
  • MacBook Pro (2010) running OSX 10.13 High Sierra connects just fine
  • Mac Mini “Server” (2011) running OSX 10.8 connects to the server, sees the share, but when try to open the share it says “the operation can’t be completed because the original item for ‘Share’ can’t be found”

Any ideas what I should be looking at to troubleshoot? I can’t enable SMB debug logs because SMB1 is enabled.

I assume that you have double checked ACLs and userids etc.

If it isn’t that, then I can only assume that older Mac O/Ses are incompatible.

I tried adjusting ACLs a little, but assumed that since I’m using the same user on all clients that if I can see the files on one then the same user should be able to see the same files on the other.

For some reason I had thought the 2009 Mac Pro was on an older OSX, and was therefore proof that the older ones were compatible. I am just now realizing, reading over that list again, that the 2011 Mac Mini is on an older version of OSX than the 2009 Mac Pro. Not sure how I missed that - I will update its OS on Friday.

Either that or I typo’ed the list.

also for the love of god please disable SMB1 - you might as well share every share a everyone all permissions, thats how insecure SMB1 is…

I think that the problem here is not that the Macs are too old, but that the file server technology is too new.

My recommendation is that you uninstall TrueNAS and install Netware as a file server instead.

Just kidding!!!

Wow! Snow Leopard (my favourite OS X), Mountain Lion, Mavericks, High Sierra… And I though I was clinging to an old OS by still maintaining some Mojave systems for the sake of a 32-bit app.

Updated that mac mini to 10.10 Yosemite. Solved the problem. Can’t believe I overlooked that. :man_facepalming:

You’re right though - most of the old macs are not being used actively, we are just connecting them to the server to dump files, with the eventual goal of consolidating into just one legacy system for old apps instead of several. (I’ve already brought home the decomissioned G4s and G5s)
