SSD Errored not capable of SMART self-check

I am running TrueNAS Scale 24.04.1.1

I woke up this morning with a few strange errors in the web UI for one of my disks.

Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], not capable of SMART self-check.
Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data.

The device is a Samsung 870 EVO 1TB. There are 4 of the same drive within this pool. I have 12 HDDs in a separate pool. All disks are attached to an LSI 9300-16i that has verified IT firmware and is up to date.

This is the only drive with alerted error and this is pretty much the first time I have received an error like this. I have encountered drive failure errors before, but this seems more like an issue with the system reading the SMART data rather than a failure error.

I have ran “smartctl -a /dev/sdc” and “smartctl -x /dev/sdc” and everything comes back normal. All self tests are passing and nothing seems out of the ordinary.

I can see self test history for the drive within the web UI and all looks normal. I even initiated a short test within the UI and it shows up in the history as completed and no errors.

It looks like the error timestamp is set for the same time when I perform a backup of some of the VMs on that pool via Veeam.

The is the first time I have seen this error and it appears to be more related to the system not being able to access the smart data at that time vs an actual drive failure. Has anyone else seen anything like this before?

A few questions:

  1. How long had the system been working fine?
  2. If for a while, then what changed? Did you update TrueNAS?
  3. The Veeam backups, Have those always been working fine in the past?

The error message indicated the SSD was in SCSI Address Translation (SAT) mode, which could be the issue. When you ran the command manually you were not in SAT.

I’m pulling this out of my rear here and don’t have a clue if this is possible but I like to theorize. Maybe the Veeam backup somehow made the controller remain in SAT for your other drives (that I have no idea what those are because you didn’t post your system configuration) and this caused the issue.

Your drives appear to be fine based on what you have indicated, that is a good thing. Figuring out why it happened is another story.

  1. I have had both pools for about 3 years no without any issues.
  2. I updated TrueNAS when 24.04.1.1 came out about a month ago. Backups and jobs run weekly, so they have definitely been run on the newest update. No alerts on previous runs until today.
  3. Veeam backups have always worked fine in the past.

The pool the SSD is in is for hosting a few VMs connected via iSCSI to an ESXi host. There are 4 SSDs total in a RAIDz1 configuration.

After looking through the kernel log, I do see that the drive was reset. It tried to issue it some commands and they timed out. So I am assuming it performed a drive reset.

There might be something underlying here and I will definitely keep an eye on it. This could be the start of a dying drive.

Two things to do:

  1. If you are able to grab the output of smartctl -x /dev/sdc and post it, then we can examine it and tell you if there are any signs of it dying soon.
  2. at an SSH window, enter midclt call disk.smart_attributes sdc | jq and post that too.

Step 2 reads the smart data that TrueNAS already has where Step 1 reads it at that time from the drive and TrueNAS is really not involved. Well that is how I understand it.

All looks good. As you said, keep an eye on it and see if there is some commonality the next time it happens, but the drive looks great, unless there is something physically wrong that SMART cannot detect of course.
