Yea I heard something about this but was not sure the details! Thanks will consider it. ![]()
Not to open can of worms here and anyone can do their own research but so far here is the summary of what I found for the current Mega:
Kim Dotcom has had no involvement with MEGA since 2015. He sold his shares and resigned from the company years ago. The current management and ownership structure are entirely separate from the Megaupload era.
I can understand the price increase to some extent, but could someone please explain the floor limit to me? It sounds like a middle finger to anyone using less than 7TB. At lower rates, it isn’t worth bothering to keep a record of our accounts?
They just don’t want to deal with the small fry (home users), but instead pivot to the SMB market. In theory that’s less hassle and more money per account. If they can get those accounts in the first place, that is…
Actually not an uncommon pivot. I remember Crashplan doing the same things a couple of years ago for their backup solution.
Its a total d*** move. I run a small business and we do billing semi-automatically. But certainly not storj. So there is the same amount of effort for them billing 1000 accounts 5$ or 100 accounts 50$. They are just counting on users not wanting to or beeing too lazy to migrate the data.
Yes obviously, unless they do the accounting manually. They just want to get rid of low volume customers. I’ll adhere and will leave asap, but I am uncertain about which alternative to pick. While there are many providers, the S3 Backup with Snapshots in Truenas is just supported for Storj? What’s best practice for Alternatives?
Not sure what you mean, but most S3 providers offer snapshots. Granted, you won’t see it in the TrueNAS webGUI, but on their webGUI.
According to the docs:
-
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
-
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
-
Hubic (closed to new accounts)
-
SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)
IMHO Dropbox should not be in this list. Their API rate limiter with not only a slowdown but complete halt, makes backing up many files impossible. This probably also applies to other none S3 providers like OneDrive, Google Drive.
From personal expierience: Backblaze B2 is great and now even cheaper than storj.
An alternative would be to use backup software that does its own versioning. Then you don’t need to rely on snapshots on your storage provider side. Also you can use client-side encryption for your data backups.
Thank you all, I decided to go with a containerised solution for restic (Backrest) which offers a more convenient approach with a nice UI. As Backup Storage I am Using Hetzner Storage Box, which seems to be the best price for my needs (3,81€ / 1TB). I leave the Snapshot management up to restic and on the Storage Box I am creating one ZFS Snapshot automatically per week (up to 10 are possible). Maybe businesses need “better” solutions but for my homelab that seems to be totally sufficient.
My Storj Account is now deleted ![]()
Backrest is using native restic under the hood right? Does that work with TrueNAS GUI for snapshots or restore has to be done through Backrest? I’m wondering what advantages there are for Backrest in docker + Hetzner Storage Box vs native Cloud Sync + Hetzner S3 Object Storage (which costs double).
I used an iXsystems promotion a year ago and paid $150 to get a $250 prepaid balance. I spent only around $40, so now they’ll just charge me $50 per month, and I’ll run out of balance within four months? I know it was dumb to even accept this promotion, but here I am.
Yeah, all the users who prepaid (including me) get screwed !
Actually here: Object Storage Pricing starting July 1, 2026 - Storj Docs
It states that who’s paying with their token is exempt from the minimum monthly fee.
Which means if you have topped your account with storj like I did then you’ll just pay for your used storage. Or you can just get some crypto and pay with that.
Yes, hence my first post. Everyone with a storage account should have received the same email I did with the same page links.
What was never clear in my email conversations with them was if the node tokens do not fully cover the cost is the storage account on the hook for the balance of the 50$. It was stepped around and alluded to a maybe at the time because I believe the answer was not known.
What was clear was the node tokens had to be in the account before the automated billing cycle billed the storage account or the storage account would be billed the full 50$.
Another point that was not clear is if it was guaranteed the node tokens payout would be there in the storage account before the billing for the storage account. Best of my knowledge from conversations is it would not be on the first cycle after setup (thus incurring the 50$ fee) and then as long as the node balance in the future was not zero in the storage account at any time, the storage would use node tokens for payment. This was due to their timing of implementation of the 50$ fee. It left no way to setup the token payment and not incur the fee.
So my take is if as a node operator you make more than 50$ a month income, you are safe to use tokens to pay for storage after the first month 50$ penalty payment.
None of this covers the storage nodes hold back of payments for the initial time period where you get no payout then they trickle it out for a period of time before releasing the full amount. (It’s to prevent churn of in/out of non serious people playing storage node operator on home labs and such.)
Storj was bought out by Inveniam Capital Partners to get decentralized cloud storage and computing power to handle massive amounts of financial data. Instead of acting as a fund manager that buys and holds companies, Inveniam charges big institutional clients (like banks, insurance companies, and real estate firms) software subscriptions and data service fees to use their platform. If you ask me it sounds a lot like the typical lets jump on the software in the cloud as a service train. They don’t want to fool with the small fry that provides no return on investment so the price for storage was jacked up to where it is profitable or closer to break even.
Regardless of motive of storj or Inveniam , I think that iX should at least unlock the cloud backup from only Storj, release an update and open the cloud backup to other storage companies besides Storj. All the pieces needed are already there in Truenas.

I operate a Storj node - and get all my payments paid directly to Storj and get a 10% bonus. I get about $16-$16 or so a month credited.
Storj costs me about $2.5 a month and I have $340 in credit due to the node. And uses 10-12TB on disks that is currently spare space. Thats 10 years (or so) of space available.
I could GE the node - but the server is on all the time anyway
Ues I just got home and I see I have the same email. That is good.
OMFG, just got this email too, and it was literally 45 minutes after I deleted my data, deleted the backup job and queued the deletion of my account. What a mess.

Wow. Sure looks like a team in chaos or malicious compliance with management edicts. Not sure which is worse.
