Switch and SFP Module

Hello Guys,

Want to understand something for networking as I’m going to buy some modules for the NIC and Switch.

The NIC manufacturer provides its own branded module and the switch manufacturer also provides its own branded module. So, my question is do i need to use the NIC brand module on the NIC side and switch brand module on the switch side? Or can i use the NIC brand module on both ends, provided that the switch has no vendor lock!

That’s a meaningful “if”, but yes. E.g. you can use basically anything with Mikrotik switches.

And what if the switch has vendor lock? In that case, i guess i need to use the NIC brand module on the NIC side and the switch brand on the switch side? Or does it have to be the switch brand on both the ends?
