Hello,
A general question to which I found no answer in the Migration Documentation:
I see that the System Dataset is on the bool-pool mirrored SSD.
Should that dataset be moved to a Tank pool (HDD) before upgrade/sidegrading from Core to Scale?
Will Scale side/upgrade wipe the boot-pool? And thus losing the system dataset an issue?
As far as I know the system dataset contains among other data all the users and rights information => seems quite important to me.
If so, I think that should be added to the documentation.
Maybe im wrong, but i think the only way Is fresh install → config upload.
So yes, you should move it before upgrade for not lose data inside… But afaik shouldn’t be so important data (except prob decrypt key?) that the config restore can’t manage.
Hope someone can confirm/deny my assumption
The online documentation should tell you whether you can do an upgrade in place, and if so where the system dataset should be located.
But regardless of what this says you should always have an up to date backup copy of the system configuration file and keys held somewhere other than the NAS itself just in case you ever need to reinstall TrueNAS and restore your configuration.
The easiest way to achieve this is using @joeschmuck’s Multi Report script which IMO everyone should install.
And the guide not mention that (or we have missed in 2 xD)… So Is safe assume that losing the original system dataset during the process (especially on fresh install) not break anything?
Honestly i don’t have paied attention on this aspect during my sidegrade, and having a strange behaviour on TLS connection it’s making me think on this as possible cause
