Time Machine Share not working after numerous attempts

I’m desperately trying to set up a Time Machine share on TrueNAS. No matter what I try, Time Machine always says “incorrect username or password” as soon as the backup starts.

Im using a Dell R730xd for TrueNAS, TM on a MacBook Pro M1.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • TrueNAS Scale 25.04.2.6
  • Setting up the TM share with a TM user; all access permissions are granted. Adding the backup job in TM only works with the correct username and password.
  • Accessing the share via Finder works; write permissions are granted.
  • restarted SMB Service, restart the whole Server.
  • I tried various settings in the SMB settings and permissions, as well as different passwords and users, but nothing worked.
  • I also tried adding the TM Backup job via the console on my Mac using the TrueNAS system’s IP address, but that didn’t work either.
  • The log data on TrueNAS shows no anomalies or errors.
  • Update to 25.10.3, still the same issue.
  • Complete new installation of Version 25.10.3 with old ZFS Pool, still the same issue.
  • Complete new installation of Version 25.04.2.6 and new data pool without any other Share, only TM Folder an SMB as TM Share setup, still the same issue.

So far, I’ve been using an old Synology NAS with TM, which is still working perfectly.

I’ve been trying for hours now to get the TM Share to work, and I’m now extremely frustrated. Everything else, like SMB shares, apps, and VMs works perfectly, only the TM Share doesn’t.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how I can fix it, or how I can figure out exactly what’s going wrong? Thanks a lot!

Try updating your MacBook Pro M1 to macOS Tahoe 26.5. That solved the problem for me.
