TrueNAS 26.0.0-beta1 time machine fails

My NAS recently upgraded to 26.0.0-beta1. Also the same day my Mac went to 15.7.7. My time machine backups are failing. I have been struggling for a few days and I just can’t get TM to work. It always fails with “Backup Not Completed”.

I don’t know which change broke it, but I can’t seem to get TM to run any more.

I deleted the backups I had so I could start over. Did not help.

I deleted the dataset and share and recreated them. I was able to access the share just fine accessing from the Finder using %K. I can create files and delete them and they are owned by my special TM user.

Add the share as a disk and again it immediately fails.

So, any bets on what failed? Time Machine or TrueNAS?

It has been a little difficult getting the new dataset and share setup as the docs seem to still conform to version 25 and the UI is different in 26.

Is there a way to safely revert to version 25 (which may not fix it anyway)?

Under system-boot you can revert back to an older boot environment

There is no real need to update to the beta just because it is the newest.

If you change your profile to General after going back to 25.10.3.1, you’ll be only shown the next stable version.

Strong recommendation → Stick to the General update profile.
The beta is as the profile you are on states, intended for developers and early adopters, so that they can test things.

I realise this may seem harsh, but consider that even if you thought that it would be fun to try the beta out, the outcome has already ended up being that your TM-backup is gone; that’s a big step closer to possible data loss.

If you’re fine with losing all your data then sure, but if you aren’t, if the data is one-of-a-kind that you can’t easily replace or recreate, then experimenting with early betas ought to be a big no-no.

As @prez02 said you can activate a previous boot environment in System > Boot Boot Pool Management | TrueNAS Documentation Hub

I’m not immediately recalling any major UI changes in these areas, but regardless it sounds like you may just be looking at the 25 version documentation? Maybe from an old bookmark? Make sure the url has /26/ in it not /25.10/ and the header should look like this:

Bear in mind that Apple Time Machine backups are notoriously fragile. According to knowledgeable members of the Apple community, like John Siracusak, you should just assume that they will failure catastrophically every few years regardless of whether their target is local or networked.

That being said, Time Machine backups to TrueNAS Scale 26 nightlies are working reliably for me.
