TrueNAS as a NAS backup -- snapshot etc strategy

Hi

I have installed TrueNAS SCALE on my old NAS and I want to use it solely to serve as a backup for my new primary NAS (ASUSTOR). This is a home use scenario, with most of the data unchanging media files plus a bunch of documents, photos and laptop backups.

Currently I am booting the TrueNAS backup server every few days and rsyncing any changes from the ASUSTOR to the TrueNAS. I think this protects me against some catastrophic failure of the primary NAS.

What I would also like to be able to do is to keep past versions of files as part of the TrueNAS backup. I’d ideally like to keep the last few versions on some schedule (e.g. 4 weekly snapshots, 6 monthly and then one from 12 months ago maybe).

Are ZFS snapshots of the TrueNAS dataset the right way to go here? Or am I looking at the wrong tool? If so, then what’s the recommended way to set this up?

Where can I read about how to recover previous versions of individual files form a snapshot on TrueNAS?

Thanks!

This video is what you want to see now:

imo yes. A periodic snapshot task for each period you want to keep should work perfectly

Wow this is much better than I thought it would be. Amazing.

Thanks.
