TrueNAS As Backup Server for Proxmox

Hello, I’m a new user to TrueNAS, I just installed Scale on an NVME connected to a ZimaBoard 832 that is running two 8TB SATA HDD in Raid 1.

Is there a precedent set or is it possible for users to backup their VMs on TrueNas in their natural state vs. how they backup on Proxmox Backup Server as files?

I know software like Minio can be ran on TrueNAS, and that’s what gave me the idea, but I could be outside of my depth here. Ultimately, I’m looking for a way to backup my VMs, not as files.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

You need to explain why you don’t want to backup as files… that is the normal approach.

Thank you for your reply.

I began my hosting setup in January, with prior virtualization experience limited to VirtualBox and Hyper-V. Although I appreciate Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) for its functionality, I’ve encountered challenges with its approach to VM backups. Specifically, I expected the backups to be more VM-centric, capturing entire VM images as opposed to handling them as individual files. Additionally, if a VM is deleted and another is assigned the same VM ID, it introduces a level of complexity that can make management and restoration confusing. I realize some of these issues could stem from user error, but I’ve also read about alternative solutions, such as Veeam, that might offer more intuitive VM backup methods.

I still have a lot to learn and would like to see what my options are.

Sure there is; Proxmox supports ZFS replication (assuming the VM is stored on ZFS), which would be the way to do this. I’d think a better way would be to install Proxmox Backup Server on the NAS (as a custom app) and run the backups that way, but that would again back them up to a file. I don’t know why you’d want to avoid files though.

Thanks, Dan.

I’m actually running Ceph.

Then in that case, no. The only way TrueNAS could store the VMs in their “natural state” would be for TrueNAS to also run Ceph, which it doesn’t do.

Thanks, for the info. Appreciate it.
