TrueNAS CORE 13.3-RELEASE is Now Available

Another ding against FreeBSD. :disappointed:

I had to rollback a few jails back to 13.2, because upgrading to 13.3 and updating my packages would result in the breakage / removal of…

  • ffmpeg
  • jellyfin
  • yt-dlp
  • Who knows what else…

Jellyfin should work.

Not without ffmpeg.

The recommendation is to stay on 13.0U6 I understand.
Will the Time machine fix from 13.3 also be implemented in 13.0U6+?
Or better move to 13.3?

13.3 release notes:

  • Updates samba and fixes issue with Time Machine share and snapshot creation (NAS-130169)

That sounds like a slightly-nicer way of saying it’s on life support.

Edit: But can this update only be done by uploading a ā€œmanual updateā€ file? 13.0-U6.2 doesn’t see a 13.3 train to update to.

Correct, manual update online for the time being.

Between that, and the text on the download page, it really sounds like you don’t want people upgrading to 13.3.

That’s only going to get worse in the next year… With the new cadence in upstream FreeBSD, you will be forced to do host version updates every 6 months in order to stay current on packages for your jails. Which means you have to deal with these kind of headaches frequently…

Because we are not supporting it for Enterprise customers (and want to avoid their foot-shooting) we have to use all this extra caution.

I assumed Enterprise users to be on a separate train.

No. Any changes to 13.0 train at this time would be for critical security updates like recent SSH CVE.

Thanks for the info about 13.3 jails. I’ll stick to 13.2 for now.

Whats the reason for this?

They discuss it on the FreeBSD forums. Apparently, dependency issues for 13.3, which break certain ports/packages, which then further break other ports/packages that also depend on the no-longer-available packages.

I assume people who upgraded the jails after upgrading to the BETA should not have issues.

How? ffmpeg and yt-dlp are not available in the repository.

Furthermore, if you try to do pkg upgrade in your 13.3 jail, it will remove jellyfin, ffmpeg, yt-dlp, and any other affected packages.

UPDATE: The particular (broken) ports were built today for 13.x ā€œlatestā€, so that means they should hopefully be available in the binary repository soon.

If jails updated without issue using the BETA, I expect no issue in migrating them to 13.3.

It wasn’t the jails that were the issue.

It was certain ports (and those that depended on them) that would not build on 13.3. Hence, certain packages were either unavailable, or would be removed if you try to do a pkg upgrade.

The jails themselves start without issue.

Back when I upgraded, I installed jellyfin in a 13.3 jail without issues. But I see it’s missing from the repositories now.

The BSD team is quick to solve all this.
