After my recent experience (I’m still setting up a local backup to my other local NAS device… Thecus ) , I’m using this "
TRUENAS-MINI-3.0-X+ " and the latest version of scale (N-1 where N is minor or minor minor version, I’m running ElectricEel-24.10.1)
it’s eating up all 32GB of RAM (which I know… linux based operating systems grab ram and top doesn’t show the relase)
but … I’d like to max this box out…
suggestions ? (I’ve read 64GB is max, likely due to the Atom CPU)
anyone upgrade to 64GB and work ? if so which memory?
Anyone upgrade to over 64GB (128) and work? (if so which memory)
(full transparency … not my wheel house but learning , my previous post:
)
the CPU should support to 256GB, DDR4 2400 ugh… but it is what it is , and it’s for I/O operations …
Easy answer for a 32GB upgrade is the iX Systems Amazon store. You know it is the correct RAM. See Upgrades section. You can also purchase it elsewhere just match the specs of your current, installed memory.
Others will post about what has worked for them and the amounts of RAM they had success with.
TrueNAS uses memory for ARC and that gets freed easily if the system needs it.
You only really have a problem and need more RAM if the amount available for the ARC would be low. Pretty much ignore the ARC and consider it as Free

I’ve read up about ZFS ARC (I’m still learning ZFS as well … had a crash course, but prior to me going to a TrueNAS solution, I only knew of ZFS from my days working with Solaris systems)
It makes sense… and I know my read/write cache drives are not configured properly (and this NAS is for personal use… I’m a software developer/architect , but I dabble in this type of stuff for my home stuff)
I also have the personality of “if I can upgrade/modify something … I want to!” lol
