UPDATE: this seems to be a CNAME for “link.storjshare.io” with a TTL of 13 seconds…
I guess that the Truenas updates are stored in storj and their link system has such a small TTL on purpose.
Hi all - after setting up pi-hole on my network, I noticed that my Scale system is doing DNS lookups for “update.ixsystems.com” (both A an AAAA) every 15 seconds and thus in my top DNS request list.
I switched off Telemetry & Daily Update Check - didn’t change anything.
Is this normal? I find this quite excessive, really.
I found a few posts talking about that being the CDN for Truenas but not why it needs it if telemetry & automated update checks are disabled.
Excessive? I guess, but so what?
if one switches off Telemetry and automated update checks, I wouldn’t expect Truenas needing that CDN so wouldn’t need to do DNS lookups. In my brain it’s a simple as that. Anything else feels a lot like something is spying.
I’m not versed at all in network sniffing otherwise I would probably try to figure out if the box reaches out to the CDN at all. All I’m asking is for somebody to help me understand this. If this forum isn’t the place for that, then I’ll just have to live with the “so what”.
That’s something I saw in other posts as well so good suggestion however I don’t run any apps directly on Truenas (via “Apps”) - never have. I’ve got a jail (via jailmkr) which has it’s own hostname so DNS calls from that come through pihole with that FQDN.
