Hello everyone, I hope everyone is well.
I have a local storage system with the following configurations:
PowerEdge R540 Server
OS: Truenas Scale 24.04
2 x 256GB Ram
PERC H330 Controller (SAS/SATA)
2 x 4TB HDD (SATA) virtualized for the OS
8 x HDD 10TB (SAS)
NOTE: SAS HDD Model Exos X10 Seagate (ST10000NM0096)
All drivers have been updated on Life Cycle.
I am facing a problem where the SAS HDDs that I have are not being recognized by Truenas, looking through IDRAC I found that the r540 Server recognizes the HD’s in its bays correctly, but when starting the Truenas OS, it does not recognize any of the 8 HD’s.
When you say that they aren’t recognised by TrueNAS, where are you looking for them?
Post the output of lsblk -S please.
Btw, I am not versed in iDRAC but in case it applies:
It’s highly discouraged to run controllers like the PERC in raid mode as opposed to IT-mode. Layering ZFS software raid on hardware raid is a recipe for disaster.
OBS.: This server fell into my lap after another “analyst” recommended the settings, visually it is chaos.
I apologize for missing this information.
When I mention that truenas does not recognize it, it would be to create a new pool.
I have 4 free SATA disks in the d-link dsn-4000 so they are listed in the image below. The SAS HD’s do not appear.
I have 2 d-link dsn-4000 blocks, but this one is connected by PCI-e Perc H800, so all my other HD’s will be listed, my problem is only in recognizing the HD directly on the Poweredge R540.
You appear to have a lot more drives than you’ve mentioned in the first post.
Please post full hardware details.
Also, the output you posted looks like you just ran lsblk without the -S
Well, maybe. I don’t know how much I trust a mode setting. Perhaps it works as one would hope, perhaps not.
Honestly, I don’t feel comfortable advising you on how to handle this other than to check and double check if there are working backups of any important data before you start changing things around.
It looks like the onboard controller is in RAID mode. You would want to use the HBA mode on the onboard controller. Not the RAID mode. The HBA mode of the onboard controller would be more compatible with Truenas then RAID and more likely to work.
