Trying to decide what OS to use on my new NAS for purely shared storage

And the CRS3xx and CRS5xx lines do support some L3 functionality inside the switch chip… Which makes for surprisingly capable devices, if their limitations fit your needs…

What about something like the Mikrotik RB760iGS? Has a SPF+ port + 5 rj45’s? Then use the CRS for a switch to the TrendNet unmanaged. I’m really looking for basic networking here so all the bells and whistles I’ll likely never need. Doesn’t have to be 100% plug and play but not something that requires a network engineering degree. I’m not well versed in networking setups. I was/am more software/hardware oriented.

EDIT:

I really just need to be able to use/enable hairpin NAT between WAN/LAN and setup a masquerade for WAN to get around the double NAT issue. Pretty much my only setup needs shown.

My other 128gb of ram got here. Going to install it after this cloud sync task is done in 24ish hours. Is 64-128GB fine to give to TNC? I was reading 1GB per TB but it will take more. It’s set at 32gb reserved atm. 2 cpu cores which usually are under 60% usage.

Got in those 10Gtek SFP+ DAC Twinax Cables and plugged a single cable into two ports on the sister card and seems that they are accepted. So that is good news. The cable also states it works with Mikrotik. Then since my ISP isn’t using PPPoE the CRS305 should work as a capable gbit router with its lower powered CPU + offloading.

The plan is now
Fiber ONT RJ45 → CRS305 RJ45/PoE Port
CRS305 SPF+ port 1 → TRENDnet SPF+ port 1
CRS305 SPF+ port 2 → 730xd SPF+ port 1

The remaining RJ45 connected devices just work off the TRENDnet RJ45 ports.

I can then unplug the ethernet from the PCIe gbit card and everything goes through the SPF+ NIC. I did read that these will operate at ONLY 10gb nothing less. Since data won’t be going through that fast will it matter?

I also need to figure out how to change what OS the CRS boots into. I assume I can just plug my PC into it to do that before plugging it up in the network and set it up to match my config in the ubiquity router?

So it seems that logging stops every reboot. Just reports null. How to I clear the logs? Last time there was an error about the database and had to clear it with a button it gave me and then it all worked. Don’t have that error now though but figure clearing will work.

EDIT:

Tried service collectd onestop
then rm -rf /var/db/collectd/rrd/truenas.local/*
and say yes to do it

Then start the service again but no change.

On a positive note, I did manage to reduce the fans in the server turning off the 3rdparty thermal nonsense using rcadmin. Dropped my wattage usage by almost 50%. Crazy how much juice those 6 little fans use at 16k RPM. Almost 200 watts.

EDIT2

Can confirm reporting doesn’t show even using non-Chromium based browsers either.
Oh well, I hope that at least it’s gather data and can find any errors.

Fixed the wifi situation. Changed the transmission power from medium to auto and it cleared all up. Not sure why it decided to go downhill around the same time as the new server went online. Really enjoying TN so far. It just works. Also the stats are showing again after removing the collectd stuff and restarting the service. Took a few hours but picked back up and is displaying again. I needed to use the f flag so -rf and it removed everything otherwise it would act like it did but the folders remained. I could tell because rewinding the stats eventually showed old stats from before going null. With -rf those were gone.

CRS305 arrived. Such a cool looking device. I must say RouterOS is so advanced, way more than I could ever start to use or half figure out. I was able to upgrade routerOS then switch to SwOS which I also upgraded. It’s basically a dumb switch now. Management port is setup as a bridge to the SPF+ and on my other switch. I was able to change ESXi to use the SPF+ which it did easily.

My TRENDnet 24port with 2 port SPF+ would have been delivered but the post is saying I owe them shipping costs even though I paid through ebay. Online doesn’t let me pay and they will reattempt delivery so not expecting it to be delivered tomorrow. :man_shrugging:

I’d like to go ONT → Router → CRS305 eth
Then SPF+ port 1 into the trendnet, SPF+ port 2 of trendnet into the dell server then all my rj45 stuff into the trend 24 ports.

I’m still kind of peeved that those wifi ap settings were causing all the internet issues. It was causing the router to peg out at 100% CPU somehow. Now it stays around 25% and I can saturate my fiber line.

Glad you got it sorted.

There are aspects to edgerouter that I preferred to Mikrotik (ie content filtering for kids) and then there were the simply awful VPN tools that never, ever, worked as advertised.

In the end, switching to MikroTik entailed a very steep learning curve (just like TrueNAS) but the VPN portion was hilariously simple by comparison.

The Network Berg on YouTube has many good tutorials re: Mikrotiks. I happen to like the Rb4011 as a router and the more recent RB5009 is even more performant.
