Ugreen NASync for TrueNAS

Some “news” to look out for those wanting to get a NASync NAS since their Kickstarter ended:

  • I spotted some of the Amazon listings through DuckDuckGo (Google for some reason won’t show them; change .de to .com for the Amazon.com pages):
  • Despite the delay of the release from July 1st (see banner from the “preheat” page a while ago"):

and missing a “rumoured” August 13th date I came across (originating from a Google Ad), I tried asking customer support to see if there’s any news on this front. While it is not advertised anywhere, CS claimed it would be expected to be released on:
    - August 20th through their own UGreen Store
    - August 31st through Amazon (Amazon.de unconfirmed, “would be looked into”)

It’s very likely the CS told release dates are inaccurate considering no marketing is done for the NASync NASes, it’s still worth mentioning it here. Unknown if the € prices are still accurate for Amazon.de/UGreen’s German store (seem to match the USD/$ ones in number), nor if there’s still any launch discount planned.

Thank you @enjineer . Very helpful posting.

I will probably take the opportunity to become a FreeNAS user too. So far I haven’t had any suitable hardware, only a Raspberry PI.

I assume you meant TrueNAS here; the last release of FreeNAS was almost four years ago. But these units look well-suited to running TrueNAS–my 6-bay unit is quite happy with it.

From what I’ve seen, it’s definitely one of the more suitable pre-assembled NASes out there for TrueNAS.

I’ve looked at Terramaster’s units before, and while they’re suitable too, they use those small USB sticks in an internal USB port. I trust eMMC or a small SSD present in the UGREEN DXP’s more than the small USBs :joy:. Would otherwise take one of the M.2 slots too, which is a shame if you want to run a separate SSD for containers or caching.

Thank you for your expert opinion. I don’t want to assemble hardware myself and that’s why I ended up with Ugreen. I also like the idea of a Chinese company.

Seems like CS might’ve told the truth: https://nas.ugreen.com/ (also https://nas.ugreen.com/de) show the message “August 20th. See you soon” (in the respective languages).

While it is kept vague what will happen on the 20th, I’m more confident that the store launch happens on the 20th. A shame they would (probably) keep the Amazon release 11 days behind, however. Would’ve loved to grab it through Amazon instead.

is there already a review of the new hardware? No further information in this thread apart from the launch date. I’ll probably buy the cheapest 2bay model soon. What do others think about the new hardware? Or am I still too early, do I have to be patient?

I happen to be using AMD A8-7650K Radeon R7, 10 Compute Cores 4C+6G for my EE testing and it’s going surprisingly well all things considered.

Granted I haven’t really thrown any real workloads at it besides dinking around with the docker apps, but I’m kinda surprised how hardy it’s being.

Edit: No this is a custom build, not a Ugreen unit.

Got a Ugreen dxp8800 (8-bays) and after tearing apart:

  • Changed the original CPU paste with PTM
  • Changed both of fans with Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM
  • Doing some fan tunings in BIOS
  • adding 96GB RAM (2x48 Crucial)
  • replacing the boot NVMe and adding another 2x NVMe
I put TrueNAS Electric Eel - Plex and few other apps, also make the hdd led script to run without glitches.
    Using 8x16TB Exos
    Main destination Plex Media Server
    Temps:
CPU - hardly reach 70-80C on intensive tasks, generally working at 30-50C
    NVMe - 30-40C peaks 50C
    HDDs - 32-34C peaks 38-42C on Scrub
Noise: decent (i won’t keep him on my desk) clearly better than original fans and better cooled

I put this for information - I know you can DIY better NAS etc on this money
