Unreadable and uncorrectable sectors on two drives

Hi,

I’ve ran into a little problem and was hoping someone with more experience could help me out.

I am running TrueNAS Scale Dragonfish-24.04.2.2 with a 6 wide RAIDZ2 pool of 16TiB drives on a PowerEdge R710 (64GB Ram, 2 x Xeon E5630, HBA H200 IT mode).
34% (22.21TiB) of the pool is used.

Now I am getting error messages about 2 HDDs.

Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 6 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 6 Offline uncorrectable sectors.

Device: /dev/sdh [SAT], 6 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
Device: /dev/sdh [SAT], 6 Offline uncorrectable sectors.

image

I am concerned as they both have 6 flagged sectors and came up at the same time. As far as I understand, 2 failed drives are okay (as far as failed drives go…) on a RAIDZ2 array.

I am wondering, however, how I should go about replacing them.
Should I replace one drive first, then resilver? Replace both drives at the same time? My hunch says do it one by one. But this is the first time I will be doing this.
Is there a way to see the serial number of for example, drive mapped at /dev/sda?

Here are the outputs of some commands as written in the asking for help post:

Seagate FARM log (GP Log 0xa6) supported [try: -l farm]

I recently had two WD RED 4TB with over 40k hours ea. tell me that their time had come. If your system were mine:

  1. Ensure your backups are good.
  2. Replace the drives / resilver one at a time.

If possible, resilver with the old drive still in place.

Thank you!
So I should preferably keep both the failing disks in operation while adding two new ones and resilvering, and only then remove the failing drives?
Does it matter if the new disks are not connected to the same HBA while resilvering?

I am planning to buy the new disks in a few days.
I’ve read somewhere that the new disks can be larger, but the extra capacity will be unused.
Can the two new disks be larger? These are 18TB disks. Can I put in 20TB disks, or should I try to match the 18TB models?

Yes, if possible. Be double sure, that you remove the correct drives.

No.

You can use 20TB, but Truenas will then be telling you all the time about a mixed capacity vdev.

Thank you all for your insights.

Hmmm, I’d rather not have any complaints/warnings. This might bother me too much
I will have to think about this.

So, I see the message for the first drive was sent on August 29. I would strongly suggest you not wait and act immediately when you get such notices as you can set yourself up for a pool loss otherwise. Yes, you can take 2 failures, but, bad things happen at the worst time sometimes and a few months is way way too long. I’d have taken action on August 29.

Yeah, that’s on me. I should have done quite a few things differently.

I need to set up email notifications. I now rely on logging in and checking from time to time, which isn’t a great system.

I hope the issue is rather recent now that I look at it. Because I just logged in again and 2 of the errors vanished. I certainly did not click dismiss.

Could it be the errors for /dev/sdh and /deb/sdb are the same disk between reboots? The server uptime is 19 days. A script shut the server down when power went out and the UPS kicked in, so it did have a clean shutdown.
Both notifications had 6 sector errors, which I guess could be a coincidence. Is there a way to check this?

I apologize for my incompetence. We live and we learn.

My two cents:

First, do not panic.

You provided some good data, but it doesn’t all line up.
The data you provided for drive sdb (S/N: WR503LCV) has no errors. Did you reboot the machine since the error messages occured?

The data you posted for drive sdh (S/N: WR50200Q) does have the 6 errors, however they are not a big problem yet.

I suspect you got hit twice, on the same drive, and I have no idea how that happened unless you have Multipath going on. The same physical drive, two sets of heads.

What to do: Obtain all the SMART data for all your drive, examine IDs 5, 197, 198, and 200. Anything other than a RAW VALUE of “0” (zero), post the entire output of that drive.

You do not believe in SMART Long tests apparently. These could save you rear if you just do it once a week, or even once a month.

So do not panic, run the SMART Long tests on those two drives, and do not be surprised if they pass, but if one was to fail, drive S/N: WR50200Q is the one. And make sure you check the drive serial number before kicking off the test with smartctl, to ensure it is the same drive you want to test.

Report back when you have some more information.

Could be, but do as Stux says and look at all the drives and post those with pending sector counts or reallocated counts.

Yes, do set up the alerts.

I checked all the drives for the 4 mentioned IDs.

Only WR50200Q (sdh) reports a non-zero value. I started a SMART long test on it. I also set up long tests on a weekly schedule.

Here is the smart output for WR50200Q:

Seagate FARM log (GP Log 0xa6) supported [try: -l farm]

I will report back with the results of the long test once it is completed as it will take a while:
Screenshot 2024-10-24 121811

I will also set up email alerts this evening. EDIT: I have set up the alerts.

The test completed faster than the estimate:

It fails the test as expected.

I am now running the long test on the other disk.

So, for me with a count of 6, would replace the drive. And if it’s under warranty still, pretty much they will have no issue replacing it due to the errors.

Once again, thank you all for helping me out.

I will replace the WR50200Q disk as soon as I get the new one.
Insert the new disk. Resilver the array. Remove disk WR50200Q and send it in for an RMA as it is still under warranty.

Not sure which post I should select as the solution. You’ve all been very helpful.

Me me me!

Just kidding. But I would mark it as solved.

That is why I recommend a weekly SMART Long/Extended test if you do not have too many hard drives. If you have a lot of hard drives then I recommend once a Month as that is reasonable in my opinion.

Hope the resilvering goes well.

The resilvering was a success. All is back to normal.
