Upgrade from FreeNAS-11.1-U5 to Latest TrueNAS Core 2x Servers

I have two nas units I need to upgrade:

  • No Virtual Machines
  • Yes SMB
  • Yes ZFS Snapshots
  • Yes NFS
  • Some Users
  • 10GB Vlan NIC Cards

Hardware is compatible. It would be nice not to have to redo all the snapshot’s and zfs sends across the network, but IIRC they removed some legacy tasks like this into a new UI/Frontend/Backend some time ago.

How do I do this or what is the best way? rootfs is on 2x mirrored 1TB drives.

Make a backup of your configuration file. Make backups of your new configurations files as you go.

I think you will need to go to version last version of 11
Upgrade to 12, upgrade to last version of 12
Upgrade to 13, upgrade to last version of 13u6. You can do the upgrades within 13 from the GUI menu and the upgrades train.

Check the documentation for your version and the upgrade notes as you go along.

I did similar, but not all the way to Scale. 11 up to 12, 12 up to 13. Was pretty much seamless but I think it required an extra reboot for my AD integration to work again. Just be ready to need to mess with AD a little, just in case (extra hour or so).

How should I do the upgrades. I have only ever done them through the GUI. Do I do GUI upgrades all the way through?

I think you can either go through the GUI or “burn” the ISO to a flash drive and upgrade through that process. I kind of think I did one server through the ISO and one server through the GUI.

But the key will be to get to the highest level of your current OS, then change the train to the next, then repeat.
