Use internal hard disk externally

Hello everyone,

before I continue with TrueNAS Scale, I have a question.

I have two internal hard disks, but not as a RAID. One hard disk for the data, a second for a daily backup.

If my self-built NAS breaks down (but not the hard disks), can I remove the internal hard disk with the data and connect it to my computer via USB using an external hard disk enclosure and access my data directly?

Is a separate configuration necessary for this?

Many thanks in advance.

The only requirement is that the host computer can read ZFS disks. FreeBSD is good. Linux can be made good. With macOS or Windows you’ll need to install OpenZFSonOSX or… you guessed it, which should be be able to read the pool; write compatibility is uncertain.

I would be more worried about losing data from your non-redundant storage, rather than the chance that your “NAS breaks down”.

That sounds good.

Since a RAID does not replace a backup and the NAS does not run 24/7, I can live with that.

Thank you very much!

The point Is that if hardware fail, you can replace It without headache… Pool can be imported easily in another truenas than other, and if you have the config file you come back totally online in 15-20 min.
Raid Is not a backup for sure, but whats the point of use zfs as not for benefit of parity
