“Applications installed on 24.10 do not automatically update after June 1, 2025. To resume automatic updates, manually remove and redeploy apps in TrueNAS 24.10.”
What does it mean by “manually remove and redeploy apps”? Referring here to apps installed from the Truenas catalog. Currently on ElectricEel-24.10.2.1.
What are the steps to take in the GUI to manually remove and redeploy an app? Will the app’s configuration, additional storage, and other settings be maintained during the process?
Also is this something we’re supposed to do before June 1st 2025, or after that date? And it sounds like we’re supposed to do it while still using 24.10, before upgrading to 25.04?
I believe it means if you are still on Eel after the magic date, you delete each app and re-setup it up. Otherwise, no automatic updates. So, you should not lose any data as lonbg as you used hostpaths, etc. But you should also note each box as you have them setup, maybe take screen captures, and re-add them exactly as they were.
I make note of every app I have settings anyway in case I ever lose the machine. So, would take a few minutes per app for me since it’s already documented.
Yeah so the larger context here is that implementing per-app IP addressing for the catalog apps that do not currently support it requires a breaking change. Ideally users can upgrade to 25.04 before June 1 to continue receiving app updates without any further action needed.
However, due to the experimental virtualization features in 25.04, some users will choose not to upgrade until 25.10 is available and those features are more stable. For users still on 24.10 after June 1, installed apps should continue to function, but attempting to apply an update will fail.
If you want to a) remain on 24.10 after June 1, and b) continue receiving timely app updates, you will need to manually uninstall the application and reinstall with the post-change version of the app. That would have to happen after the new app versions are rolled out on June 1. And as @sfatula says, you’ll want to first make sure your data is stored in persistent locations and your config is documented.
We’ll look at further clarifying the messaging on that note to clarify options and what you’d need to do.
So the user choice is whether to remain on Truenas 24.10.2 and keep the existing VMs but after June 1 app updates will break them unless apps are reinstalled, OR upgrade to 25.04.0 and keep the apps and their updates but risk going “experimental” and breaking the VMs. Apps vs. VMs. Beginning to feel some upgrade exhaustion.
