ZeroFS anyone?

I was wondering if anyone has experience in setting up ZeroFS with TN for backups.

I only recently discovered it, and it looked to me like a nice idea.

TL;DR you can create a NBD (network block device) backed by a remote S3/object storage, and then use the block devices locally to build a ZFS FS on top, that you can use for replication for TN (that’s my guess/idea).

The data is encrypted by ZeroFS before being stored to S3.

Github repo shows basically single person developing and maintaining it, and it’s relatively new. IMO, I’d rather have something that’s more of a known quantity for backup targets personally (because backups are one of those things that one wants to be rock solid).

These days it’s incredibly easy to spin up a new software product, but the key things I personally look at are: history (how long has this been around), governance structure (is there a team that maintains it and keeps it going), and release / security management (there’s a lot of overhead for handling security disclosures and security releases).

In the days of AI coding it’s easy to lose sight of the simple fact that a lot of what open source projects bring to the world isn’t the code (yes, that’s important), but the governance structures, people, and human processes that turn the code into a product that you can rely on when your livelihood (if you’re a professional admin) or marital bliss (if you’re a home admin) is at stake.

So you need to evaluate the stakes for how you’re planning to use some software product, and your own risk tolerance.
