Accessing Child Folders

Good day,

I am using TrueNAS-13.0-U6.4 i have a challenge when a user adds a new folder and then wants to delete the folder, i find myself having to use shell commands to remove the folders/files.

I have no issues with this, however i want to find out if there was a means via a Gui of sorts to go into children folders to add or delete data on a dataset?

Check the users permissions

The file manager app should achieve this.

Sounds like permissions are not quite right. I presume you would like this user to be able to delete their own folders?

Thank you for your response.

I thought this was the case but the brand new user i created has full control.

File Manager app on Windows or on TrueNas - apologies just want to confirm your suspicion.

Thank you for your response @Johnny_Fartpants yes, however more so i want users and an admin to be able to remove folders if possible.

Can we take a look at how you’ve set permissions in the TrueNAS UI please.

When setting up an SMB dataset in TrueNAS I typically follow these steps:

  1. Create the dataset and set the Share Type to SMB.

  2. Select the dataset and click Edit Permissions.

  3. Use the ACL presets with RESTRICTED as my preferred choice.

  4. Leave root and wheel as owner and group.

  5. ‘Add ACL ITEM’ - Grant my users group Modify access.

  6. ‘Add ACL ITEM’ - Grant my admin group Full Control.

  7. Remove the owner@ and group@ ACEs as they are not needed (in my case).

  8. Click Save and proceed to share it using the default settings.

Thank you for your reply.

Hi there, when i complete this then all my users can access the parent folder but the folder is empty?

Why not setup a test dataset using my above suggested config and see if you get better results. If so you can then change accordingly.

File Browser* (sorry typo) is a TrueNAS community app however, I would strongly suggest you fix the underlying issue first. Johnny has you on track.

Hi there, interesting creating a fresh dataset works, so why with the same settings does my datasets not work, i wonder if it is due to i remove wheel group and add my group i created.

That does indeed seem like the only noticeable difference.

Glad it’s working.

Fun fact after restarting the TrueNas server i am again not able to access Test its blank haha

Is there a means to repair the instillation, looks its a fresh install but I’m curious if there is an equivalent sfc scan sort of command.
