Advice on replacing the boot device in FreeNAS Mini-XL Plus

Greetings,

I just purchased a used FreeNAS Mini-XL Plus. The unit arrived diskless, and the SATADOM boot device had also been removed.

To replace the boot device, would it be best to:

  • Replace the SATADOM
  • Use the M.2 slot
  • Use the 2 2.5" SSD slots for a mirrored boot configuration?

Thank you for your guidance and suggestions.

Replace the SATA DOM module for the boot device.

Install an M.2 module, import it as a single-device pool, and use it for storing VM images (if you plan to run any).

The last option is overkill. TrueNAS doesn’t allow the use of the boot device for anything other than the OS (which is quite small). And since it’s really easy to recover from boot device failures, you don’t need the mirror.

@jbettigole Thank you very much for the feedback.
