Advice on Server Build

They’re wrong

But this is best covered here:

Most ZFS/TrueNAS videos on YouTube are shit (incl. LTT). They give dangerous advice and, as others have already said, are mostly suitable for entertainment.

The positive exception is Lawrence System.

I can also recommend used enterprise gear for board, CPU, and RAM. Not for PSU and disks, where there is a bigger risk.

As an example, I have an 8-core Xeon E5 with 256 GB of RAM and 10 Gbps SFP+ card for my VMS. Cost me less than 400 EUR incl. case. Would I still buy it today? Probably not in exactly that configuration. But 3 years ago it was perfect for me.

If you have a bit of time, looking around can provide you with great value for money. I am not saying that it is absolutely the way to go. But many people are not even aware that it is a viable option. And, talking about reliability, I run my business entirely on used systems.

Your evidence is watching youtube videos!? I sure hope not, those so called experts are rarely so. Well, maybe Stux videos are ok.

I rate youtube advice just above Chatgpt, which is less than a 0 on my scale. So, not saying much.

I totally agree with used enterprise gear. So many advantages like pcie lanes, threads, inexpensive, less “BIOS” issues, proven and recommended hardware, etc. I’ll gladly take my old e5-2698v3 over any modern Intel consumer cpu as an example. It was so cheap too.

The other problem with youtube videos, is even if you found a poster that is actually competent, it’s almost certainly out of date and the advice no longer accurate in many cases.

I’ll fix my screendoor or remove a car part by watching a video, sure, Scale? No way, ever.

Hello
So i would use Gigabyte Mainboard MC12-LE0, also can i buy one of these Network Cards and link the sever with my pc directly with a cable likle this ( ZTE DAC twinax SFP+ to SFP+ 10GB Copper 2M) because the router that i have its Asus GT-AC5300 which its 1GBps.
My only reason for a 10GBps card is that i will take a long time to write the TVShows on the server.
This are the cards im thinking:

  • EMULEX IBM OCE11102 Dual-Port 10GbE FC SFP+ PCIe x8 Network Adapter FRU 49Y7952
  • EMULEX IBM OCE10102 Dual-Port 10GbE SFP+ PCIe x8 Virtual FC Adapter FRU 49Y4252
  • HP 530FLR-SFP+ 2-Port PCIe x8 10GbE Network Adapter 647579-001 649869-001 DL380p G8

Im confused, if i install TrueNAS on M.2 SSD, i cannot install the apps there and i need a sepparate SSD for that?

Boot pool is for boot only.
