AI incorrect answer

I asked “How do I turn a single drive into a mirror” i.e. by adding a second drive as a mirror of the first existing mirror, and AI told me only how to add a whole new mirrored vDev.

What? An AI that doesn’t give a correct answer, how dare they!

I saw many similar things when the AI first came online. I tested it out and decided that reading the user guides was much more accurate.

In essence AIs are basically parrots without a shred of actual intelligence by which they can make value judgements and weigh up the veracity of the information they are fed as training materials - and as they say Garbage In, Garbage Out.

I never rated my brother-in-law as a very good lawyer, but when he started referencing ChatGPT as the basis for his (informal) advice I knew that the rot had reached the remotest parts of his brain.

This is absolutely the case with generative llms in general, and a big part of the reason we’ve limited the data that bot is able to answer from to mainly official TrueNAS documentation, to prevent it from hoovering up 10 year old forum posts or random blog posts and running wild with whatever it comes up with. Still, people smarter than me in this field have said it is (currently?) impossible to fully eliminate hallucinations–especially in cases like this where the question seems just close enough to the documentation that it could find in Managing Pools that it thinks that is the likely answer.

That said, this particular issue should be solvable by expanding the documentation to cover the topic. So I’m clear, you were looking for a procedure for adding an additional disk to a single disk Stripe vdev, converting it to a mirror? You say “adding a second drive as a mirror of the first existing mirror” but I’m guessing that’s a typo since you wouldn’t typically have a single disk mirror.

DAVE, You better not say that to HAL 9000, he’s sure to plunge all your accounts to zero money, approve you for dozens of high value loans (and keep the money for his computer upgrades).
