Backup data in Qnap - Restore in TrueNAS

Hello,

I’m new to TrueNAS. I want to convert a Qnap TS-453D to TrueNAS. I have read up on the HW requirements and bought the necessary stuff so I don’t expect insurmountable problems there.

My main problem is the data migration. The NAS holds 16 TB data that needs to backed up while running QTS 5.2 and restored on the same physical disks in TrueNAS. Approx. 10 GB are important and I would like to do a backup to the cloud. For the other data, I have a 20 TB desktop HDD with USB 3.1 interface available. I’m currently using HBF but it seems that software has no counterpart in TrueNAS.

Any tips on how to do make a backup that makes a restore as fast and as painless as reliably possible are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

HBF? do you mean HBS (Hybrid Backup Sync) by Qnap?

Yes. Sorry, typo.

Here is a suggestion…
Plug your USB drive on the TS-453D front panel. It should show up under External in the disk manager when recognized.

Create a rsync RRTR (?) (not Hybrid) backup job and select the External USB as the target. Permissions are weird on these backups, so depending how you restore to the Truenas, ensure you overwrite so the new source perms.

Hope that helps for an idea.

That’s almost exactly how I did it, but I used a port at the back. It worked like a charm. If the restore on TrueNAS will work as well, I’ll be a happy guy.
