Bare Metal Install Issues

Hello - I’m attempting to install TrueNAS Scale on a Dell R730xd, but I can’t get drives to show up during the installation phase.

I have:

  • Re-initialized all drives (they used to be in a larger array)
  • Confirmed all drives are working and seen by the backplane
  • Set the H730 controller to HBA mode in both iDRAC and BIOS

I can get an install drive if I put create a virtual drive with any of the drives in the RAID controller, but I’ve read everywhere that this is very much not best-practice (and if I do that, I can’t see the remaining drives in the web GUI). It seems like I’m missing something obvious, but I obviously can’t figure out what that is. Any help/guidance would be welcome.

Is this really a HBA rather than a RAID controller which pretends to operate as a HBA (but doesn’t)?

It’s definitely a RAID controller, but I can’t speak to whether it pretends to operate as an HBA but doesn’t actually operate that way.

My H730 Controller has been running for more than a year flawlessly in HBA mode. With the latest firmware, SAS-RAID_Firmware_700GG_WN64_25.5.9.0001_A17_01 and 8 SAS -SATA Disks all CMR on Scale.
You have not to do any configuration with the HBA-IDRAC software except HBA mode. This is is essential.

Please run the following diagnostic commands and copy and paste the results here (putting the output from each command in a preformatted text box </>):

  • lsblk -bo NAME,MODEL,ROTA,PTTYPE,TYPE,START,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME,PARTUUID
  • lspci
  • sas2flash -list
  • sas3flash -list
  • sudo zpool status -v
  • sudo zpool import
  • for disk in /dev/sd?; do; sudo hdparm -W $disk; done
  • for disk in /dev/sd?; do; sudo smartctl -x $disk; done

I will confirm the firmware load - I would assume it’s old, as the rest of the firmware and BIOS were out-of-date.

Hi, I installed the “newest” firmware via an old Win Server (2016) installation on a SSD only to upgrade the BIOS, IDRAC and the H730 because I could find only Win files on the Dell website. It was not necessary to approve the Win installation, because the server was offline. The IDRAC SW was iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_J3JTJ_WN64_2.85.85.85_A00. I have an T330. But is the same Generation.

In that case you cannot use it, unless you are willing to accept an increased risk for loss of data.

Please let’s NOT speculate. The commands I asked to be run are designed to give us DETAILED FACTS about the configuration that can be used to reliably inform the advice that can be given. The RAID card that @baronfunke has may already be flashed to IT mode - we just don’t know right now.

So let’s get the diagnostic output and then we can give some sensible advice based on facts.

Thanks, @ChrisRJ - I updated to that newest version of the RAID controller software mentioned by B52 (SAS-RAID_Firmware_700GG_WN64_25.5.9.0001_A17_01 - released 03/024) and that did the trick. Seeing all the drives on the installation page now.

Thanks @Protopia - I definitely set HBA mode both through the pre-boot controller management and via iDRAC (which was, as you might guess, unnecessary), but it wouldn’t show up until I updated to that newest version of firmware for the H730. I’ll do more thorough testing before I start migrating data, but it’s at least a step in the right direction.

Yes, but with a dedicated HBA modus, no Raid is possible if selected with the newest firmware.

You are welcome. My pleasure.

Again, a RAID controller with HBA mode is not the same as an HBA and using the former increases the risk for loss of data

Please read What's all the noise about HBAs, and why can't I use a RAID controller? | TrueNAS Community for more details.

@Protopia after upgrading the controller firmware, I was able to install on a single 2.5" on the back (with the second as a SSD cache), as well as create a pool with all 12 3.5" drives on the front. Do you still want those commands run with their output for troubleshooting? I only ask because it looks like more than one of those commands will try to create a new pool with remaining drives, which might break what is already working.

None of these command will create (or destroy) anything. They will list the hardware, drives health and parameters, pool layout and inform about any “ghost” pool which cannot mount properly.

OK - I’ll get those commands run and supply them to the thread once I get back in front of my actual workstation (remoted in via Parsec, and no “Insert” key to use lol).

Sorry these should have been:

  • sudo sas2flash -list
  • sudo sas3flash -list

Can you rerun these please as these and the lspci output you already provided are the keys to checking your HBA firmware.

Also a couple more questions:

  1. How much memory does your server have?
  2. Do you run apps or VMs on this server?

(The only comments I have on the results so far are 1) to wonder whether the SAS disks have a write cache and if so whether you would benefit from having it enabled and 2) whether you have regular SMART short and long tests enabled on all drives (including the SSDs).)
