Running TrueNAS on Dell r730 with PERC H730 in HBA mode via Proxmox

Hello.
TLDR:
Will a Dell PERC H730 configured as HBA work well with TrueNAS with individual drives passthrough?

Longer version:
I got a “new to me” Dell r730, Dual Xeon E5-2680, 256GB RAM, a real beast (for my needs).
It runs proxmox with a couple of very lightweight VMs.

I want to migrate my home TrueNAS to it.

I read tons of mixed stories. Some people say “It is not true HBA” (although I don’t know if they simply parrot what they have read) and some say “It works fine for me”. I don’t know what to believe (here and here for example)
So.

  1. How can I know if it’s going to work well?
  2. Most importantly: What are the implications of it not working well. I am fine with a hiccup where I can turn it off and move it back to the old server, I am not fine with total data loss.

My plan is to simply move my 4x18TB spinners and pass them directly to TrueNAS. I can’t passthrough the entire HBA as it is used for the proxmox boot drives, I am not even sure if this by itself is a problem…

I haven’t connected any spinner yet, I can do it if it would help the diagnastic, I am adding the information asked in the thread I quoted:

sas2flash -list and sas3flash -list show nothing as there is no LSI card (well, there is but it’s rebranded… I copied the tools to the proxmox host and it yielded nothing).

zpool is irrelevant to run as I don’t have any pools on the proxmox host.

Using the H730 is one thing, you’ll find plenty of anecdotal commentary on that. One side will say if you value you data, don’t use a RAID controller - another side will, as you say, point out that “It works for me”. I’m in the former camp. I wouldn’t use a RAID controller even if you paid me to.

The (even) more concerning point is that you appear to be passing the drives through individually to the TrueNAS VM. That’s a big no-no. Proxmox understands ZFS and will happily import that pool if it feels like it. When that happens and the drives are subsequently imported again by your TrueNAS VM you are looking at pool corruption with total pool loss on the table.

Doesn’t your board have any SATA ports so you can separate the HDDs and SSDs?
The recommended way is to pass the controller through to the VM + blacklist it in Proxmox as to prevent bad stuff.

Thanks! I was hoping that there was a way to blacklist the drives but apparently there isn’t, so yes, I agree that it’s a no no.

I don’t know if my board has SATA ports, I need to check. Not so easy as it’s at a friend’s rack and has ***t sitting on it (need to go and clear it).
Is it possible to connect only part of the front cage to onboard sata and the rest to keep with the HBA?

An alternative would be to get my existing LSI and external Lenovo JBOD and connect it, the problem is that there is limited space behind the server and I am really afraid that someone would bump into the external SAS cable…

Looking at this server some more, it seems like it may have SATA ports, but it lacks a way to power those devices without resorting to inventive methods (in the comments).

I don’t know and rather not guess. It would depend on the backplane in use. Even if you have a 4xSATA to SFF-8643 reverse breakout cable it wouldn’t work if you have an expander backplane.

I think you broke the record for longest wall of text in this forum.

Yes - it is a problem. The recommendation for running TN under Proxmox (for reasons of avoiding pool corruption - so good reasons) is that you need to:

  1. Pass through the HBA in its entirety to TrueNAS.
  2. Blacklist the HBA in Proxmox.

Ignore this at your own risk - a risk of losing all your data.

The answer is probably that it works just fine until it doesn’t. ZFS is a high integrity file system only if the HBA acts exactly as an HBA should - if a PERC H730 acts differently in any way, then you are putting your data at risk. The question is not so much about whether it works in normal circumstances, but rather whether there are unusual circumstances (like an O/S crash or a power outage or some sort of disk problem) when it causes pool corruption.

I am not an expert in the deep details of a PERC H730 - but if any such experts say it is not a good idea (and the Reddit down-vote for them seems to have the ring of truth to me because RAID0 passthrough is NOT the same as a true HBA - for example it may do seek optimisation which definitely voids the ZFS integrity that relies explicitly on I/Os being done in the exact sequence ZFS defines), then personally I would trust them and buy a proper HBA to use instead.

Thanks all, it looks like I will be ditching the idea of using anything onboard and just stick my LSI and use the external JBOD, probably the best way to move forward.
