Sorry I am new to Truenas and facing an issue while creating pool for new installation . I have 3 different sizes drives installed for home NAS only. Once go to create Pool dont see those drives as saw in video but see them on right side showing as unassigned drives.
I already wiped out drives with full zero but still not sure whats arong with it .
Also tried manual selection for VDEV but can drag those drives to right side but I can see drives in there and in Truenas as wel… Anyhelp appreciated . Thanks
Using 3 different drive sizes in a RAID-Zx wastes the extra space in the larger drives because ZFS will use the smallest drive as base size. Of course, at a later time you can replace the smallest drive(s) with a larger drive(s) to get more space.
However, you can do something like this:
Mirror of 4TByte & 6TByte, giving only 4TByte of usable space
Mirror of 2 x 2TByte, giving 2TByte of usable space
Simply depends on the number of disks, the sizes and use case. Back to my original questions.
Last, it is not recommended to use RAID-Z1 anymore with disks larger than about 2TBytes. People do and have no trouble. But, you could end up a statistic when dealing with a failed disk, and another failure occurs.
Hello,
Thanks please note the issue is I cant create pool or VDEV as see those all disks under Storage>Disks wiped them all as well. I have as follows
1 disk - 1.82 TB
1 disk 2.73 TB
1 disk 953.57GB
However when try to create pool dont see these disks to assign them to pool but under manual disk selection see those disks and cant drag and drop to under VDEvs section. All disks being shows as unassigned disks.
Thanks for the clarification. With that mixture of drives, you don’t have many options.
What is the use case?
And what amount of storage where you hoping to get?
ZFS is not the most flexible when dealing with situations like yours. A RAID-Z1 of all 3 disks would only get you about 2TBytes of usable storage. A Mirror of the 2 larger disks gets you about the same.
