Converting to truenas

I’m currently running Windows for my server but I’m tired of fighting the network limitations and problems with sharing and am considering switching to TrueNAs , but what I really need to know before I attempt this is can I move all my current files over two trunas without losing anything I’m looking at about 10 TB and I really would be devastated if I had to reaccumulate all of my stuff that’s taking me years to gather.

The only filesystem truenas uses is zfs, and i doubt that you run zfs on windows because it’s experimental at best. So you’d have to backup your data somewhere create your pools in truenas and zfs and copy your data back from the backup.

Can you outline your current server structure +/- backup arrangements, and a plan to migrate the data within your resources?

You can copy across files from Windows to a TrueNAS server by enabling the SMB (SAMBA) service on the TrueNAS and setting up a share for the Windows box, but of course you have to build the TrueNAS server first.

I’m currently just using a computer with an HVA running Windows 10 pro then I use for storage and Plex to distribute my media I have not had any luck getting file sharing to work on Windows regardless of the enormous amount of times that I have attempted it. I quite literally know nothing about any other operating systems I had hoped if I installed TrueNAs that I would either be able to just plug the hard drive in and access the data or use a sata docking station to transfer it to the TrueNAs system. Again I’m completely new to this and I do not know what to do, The only thing I’m certain of is I’m tired of fighting Windows to shareholders

Neither of these is possible. What you’d need to do is transfer your data over the network to your NAS, which is kind of time-consuming, but not particularly difficult.

Backing up is no problem that’s already done I make duplicate copies of every thing I have as I put it on my drive. Looking at about 9TB what adventure I guess to how long it would take to transfer back to trenas

I would really not recommend TrueNAS in that case. Its setup is certainly more complex than to setup/enable file sharing on Windows. I would recommend that you find someone local who can help you with Windows.

I know my way around the computer pretty well and I’m no stranger to Lennox The process of file sharing with Windows isn’t hard blaming me to set up it just never functions correctly consistently. Every time I reset it up and remap a network drive to another computer it works for day or two and then the drive disconnects and this is with me setting up a static IP so there should be no logical reason why the drive becomes disconnected after a day or two I can then disconnect the drive and reconnect it that works just fine but that’s a pain in the butt . I really do want to try something different The only thing that’s truly causing me to hesitate from pulling the trigger is trying to find out a rough time frame of transferring all my files over that and I wanted to be certain that I would be able to transfer file formatted on a Windows disk to the true Nas

Please put yourself into the shoes of those trying to help. Your way of writing doesn’t exactly make it easy to go over the content. Proper punctuation and a new paragraph here and there would be helpful.

As to the contents: If Windows sharing does not work reliably (without knowing why), what makes you think it will be better with a system that is considerably more complex and less familiar?

If you want to transfer files, that should happen via the network. USB is also possible but more complex to set up.

What you cannot do is plugin the disks to TrueNAS and continue to use them. They must be reformatted.
