Custom LXC images in TrueNAS SCALE 26 Beta

I tried searching for this, but the posts about this topic I found still reference Incus which, as far as I know, isn’t part of 26 any more.

Is it possible to use/reference/upload/select a custom LXC image to spin up? Maybe imported via CLI if nothing else works? I’m trying to create a NixOS LXC, but the base image in the catalog lacks EVERYTHING. No nixos-rebuild, no nix command, no nano or vim. Not even vi, ls or cat are part of the image.

The intent appears to be to keep the LXC as a skeleton system to be extended at provisioning time, or to use the bigger “container” image (which isn’t part of the catalog but can be downloaded from hydra.nixos.org) instead. Or to just build a custom image which is also quite easy.

But I can’t find a way to import my downloaded or built images into the TrueNAS LXC system, at least to via the UI. Is there a way to do this? Or is the ability to use your own images not even intended?

havent seen a way

i am unclear what the libvirt / lxc template format is

you could try uploading one to? no idea if the UI would see it though, though you could use the middleware to create it instead possibly

/mnt/.truenas_containers/<poolname>/images

–edit–

so just took a quick look the downloaded images are a dataset each, i have not yet found the right want to create a clone datatset, modify it and use the middleware to build an image from it - doing mounts and dataset work can cause the shell and system to become unstable, i would suggest waiting for ix systems to add the feature later…..

–edit2–

currently the python middleware that looks for images only looks at a registry at REGISTRY_URL = “https://images.sys.truenas.net/streams” so no easy way to hack around the feature even if creating your own dataset - i guess in theory you could modify the dataset once downloaded… personally i am stopping at this point. - you best bet might be a oneshot init script when you created the image that customizes the container as you want
