Smartctl open device: /dev/sdd failed: INQUIRY failed

I turned off the power, took out the disk.
I have a SATA → USB orico hub.
Plugged it in, on a normal computer. The disk is visible, it doesn’t make any weird noises, doesn’t think for a long time, etc.
Ran victoria, it can’t read its smart log, but it reads the current smart. No critical errors there.
Ran a quick test on the disk surface, all 18tb passed successfully.

What do you recommend to do?
Should i try to swap two of this disks with each other? To determine maybe there is a cable \ port problem.

It worked ok for about 4 years in this configuration.

I also tried rebooting nas, scrub, zpool clear. Problems occures again =
Thanks in advance.

NAS config
ASROCK J4125-ITX
32GB 2400 DDR4

TrueNAS Scale on Samsung 870 EVO 250GB

Mirror 1 18Tb+18Tb (ST18000NM000J-2TV103)
Mirror 2 22Tb+22Tb (WDC_WUH722222ALE6L4)

Is the drive connected directly to the motherboard when installed in the system? What version of TrueNAS are you running?

i’m not sure actually.
ASROCK J4125-ITX have 4 sata ports.
So SSD 256gb - 1 port (boot dirve), 3 HDD - 3 ports. Aaaaand one HDD via M.2 sata apdater.
But i’m not sure if it is sdd, i’ll try to check it.

Latest.
SCALE ElectricEel-24.10.2

Check it using the drive serial number (ZR51WVQL). The sdd can change on you during reboot.

And another question, were you using a previous version of TrueNAS and if so, what was that version?

One last question, Did you “update the ZFS features” when you shifted to SCALE? This is important as if you did, it limits your ability to roll to the previous version. As a rule of my thumb, Never update the ZFS feature set unless there is a feature you need, or at least wait a few months to ensure your system is completely stable. I never upgrade. No need.

I’m using it almost 5-6 years for now.
Previous before 24.10.2 was 24.10.0.2

Yes.

How can i check it? smartctl not working on it, hdparam too =(

Do you have the ability to change your boot environment back to 24.10.0.2 ?
If you do, try that first. This would just allow you to verify if the drive support changed or a bug was introduced in the newer version. It happens.

Physically look at the drive. Always physically identify a drive if you have problems and/or replacing it. You never want to replace to good drive. In your mirror that would be very bad.

At this time i would also tell you to backup any important information if you can. Better to be safe.

I tried, same.

I know this, I mean how to detect in ssh in linux =)
I don’t have swap drives now, i need to order new one.
Meanwhile can i swap this two drives with each other to see, will ZR51WVQL fail, or other drive? If ZR51WVQL - replace. If now other drive will fail - sata port \ cable problem.

I’ve changed the slot in my nas for ST18000NM000J-2TV103 ZR51WVQL
Now it’s SDE, and i can actually run smartclt on it

So it’s cable \ port sata problem?

It’s doing resilver on web again automatically after this. No problems now, but I’ll check, they may appear again later =(

What does that mean exactly. Pretend I’m an idiot, it make communicating better.

I have 6 ports sata total. 5 occupied, 1 empty.
I moved the disk from the 5th to the first, free one.

That was smart. It means one of two things, either the one SATA port is bad, or more likely the cable is suspect. Recommend replacing the cabke and plugging back into the original port. See what happens. It doesn’t sound like a drive failure.

Yeah.

I’ll try it =)
But it’s very strange how it become SUDDENLY bad after 4 years 0_o

Yes, it does happen as crazy as it sounds. I won’t pretend to understand why.
