USB enclosures are generally discouraged - can you post the make, model, and lsblk -o NAME,SERIAL as well as the version of TrueNAS you’re using?

Sight unseen, if it’s a multi-bay enclosure and some bays are empty, it might be returning 0000000000000000 instead of a null character.

In the end it depends how the usb enclosure presents the drives.

Threads are not closed automaticalla afaik.
