Flash LSI MegaRAID 9361-4i to it mode

Hello,
I got LSI MegaRAID 9361-4i, and I was wondering if I could flash it into IT Mode.
I could not find much online expect that there is an option to use it in JBOD mode, but I also found a post that it is not the same as IT Mode.
Do you guys know any good tutorial on how to flash this LSI card?
Thanks in advance!

Did you copy the text from the old forum? It has the same expect/except error.

The answer unfortunately the same for the -4i as for the -8i.

Here is another link to a post on this forum.

I wanted to make sure that nothing had changed and that this was still possible.

It’s a shame that I bought this unsuitable model.

I am considering the LSI SAS 9211-8i. Will it work in IT mode?

Will the LSI SAS 9211-8i work with Proxmox + TrueNAS on a Dell DP/N 0654JC LGA1151 DDR4 Optiplex 5060 SFF machine?

A 9211 will work in IT mode. But how are you going to use a -8i HBA in a SFF machine? Where are the drives?

That works, but as promox “understands” zfs, there are a few pitfalls - search for blacklisting eg.

-8i HBA in a SFF machine - Will it work via PCIe?

Should I install drivers from the Proxmox console?

I can’t find drivers on the non-intuitive broafcom website.

You shouldn’t need to install drivers - proxmox (or rather the Linux kernel) should include them. The question is how you’re going to fit that many drives in an SFF machine.

I don’t know. Is there any way to solve this problem?

Would giving up Proxmox VM and installing only TrueNAS on an SFF machine solve the driver problem?

I’m not sure you understood us quite right as I’m not sure if there even is a problem.
You said you were thinking about getting a 9211-8i. That’s a variant which has two SAS ports which break out into four ports for HDDs each in the same enclosure as the controller (8i → 8 disks internally).
You also mention a SmallFormFactor build - these typically don’t have the space for eight HDDs. That has nothing to do with the OS or the drivers you’ll want to use.

Do not confuse drivers and (Hard Disk) Drives.

If you want to use an external disk shelf you should aim for a 9211-8e which has external sas ports.

Sorry I should have written more information about my setup and hardware.
I didn’t understand that it was about disks and not drivers.
I have space for NAS drives in a separate small casing-pocket (4 slots) outside the SFF. I had to run the power cables outside the SFF into these pockets.

The motherboard has RAID enabled in the BIOS. Proxmox is installed on 2x SSD as a mirror with btrfs.

I wanted to build a basic NAS under TrueNAS with zfs. 2 x 8 TB HDD 3.5 as a mirror.

Will the 9211-8i be a good choice for my project?

As already mentioned for that use case the 9211-8e would be better since you don’t have to route the cables from the inside of the sff case to your disk enclosure.
