Hard drive availability

Ugh! So I decided to wait on buying hard drives since the sysetm price and other purchases around Christmas were eating up my dispopsable cash.

You can’t find 4TB Red Plus drives for less than $200 (at least from a seller I’d trust and new).

I did find some Seagate Ironwolf for $99 each, but was limited to only getting 3. Now they are $109 each.

where are folks getting hard drives?

Same for everyone, the AI Datacenter craze has everything going up now, even spinning rust!

Welcome to the AI bubble.

That struck me as funny because yesterday, in my 2026 Toyota Tundra User Manual, I read that the transmission shifts based on what the AI thinks. I thought to myself, so AI has been around since an automatic transmission was created that shifts based on electrical sensors. Or does that mean AI is also analog as well, then we can go back to the invention of the automatic transmission.

Crazy, everyone labels stuff “AI” when it isn’t a thinking machine.

But yes, even spinning rust is expensive. With that said, NewEgg is selling that drive, as new for as low as $99 USD. And that is NewEgg selling it, not a third party. I limit what I buy via third party. Or directly from WD for $130 USD.

Just looked. $150 for the seagate ironwolf (non pro unit). The one for “99” is out of stock or not available.

Thanks for the replies. I was making sure I wasn’t missing something…making sure my google-fu wasn’t broken.

Everything is expensive and that even includes used HDD and RAM!!!

I was planning on making some upgrades to my server this year, but both used HDD and used DDR4 LRDIMM are now 2-3x more what I paid for in early 2023… ; which frankly is ridiculous, so I’m holding off until hopefully this AI bubble bursts…. though it may be bad for my stocks lol.

Tell you what, I’m ready to sell a few motherboards with CPU and RAM, maybe it will help makeup for the extreme amount of money I spent on my new truck

@Cali_Gator You know, the drive availability will increase and the prices will decrease a few days after you purchase your drives. It always seems to happen :money_mouth_face:

@joeschmuck I hear you. Seems you and I have the same hobbies. I’m gonna put a new suspension on my 4x4 Frontier this year…probably in a few months. That’ll be about the same price as the server.

And I’m sure you’re right. I actually just got the last 3 HDD’s from B&H photo. They were only $9 more than from Amazon. The vendor on Amazon wouldn’t let me buy 3 more; they had a 3 drive limit.

I figure getting it from another vendor completely that maybe I won’t get the same batch, so hopefully that will reduce the risk of 3 drives failing at the same time. I guess we’ll see.

But at the moment, the prices are still going up and are getting harder to find.

B&H has always been reputable for me. I really wanted the factory air lift suspension on my truck, but was unable to locate it, and I searched for months. But the wife likes the truck I bought a lot.

I hope those drives are problem free for you.

Cheers
