Hardware sanity-check for a first TrueNAS build (storage/share + consolidating ~10 old USB drives)

Hi all — building my first TrueNAS box and would like a hardware check before I buy.

## Use case

- Pure network file storage/sharing (SMB) for a small office: document archive, reference library, important records. No VMs, no app hosting.

- Accessed by 1–2 laptops over the LAN (laptops on Wi-Fi, NAS wired).

- I also have ~10 existing USB hard drives (NTFS/exFAT) I want to mount and read

to copy their contents onto the pool and consolidate them.

- Reliability, data integrity (ZFS + ECC), and easy future expansion are what I care about.

## Proposed hardware

- Board + CPU: ASRock Rack AM5 board (for validated ECC) + low-end Ryzen (8000-series)

- RAM: 32 GB ECC UDIMM (2×16)

- Boot: 128–256 GB SATA SSD

- Data: 2–3× NAS HDD (WD Red Plus / Seagate IronWolf, 8–12 TB) — mirror or RAIDZ1

- Case: Fractal Node 304 / 804 (drive-cage focused)

- PSU: Seasonic / be quiet 450–550 W, 80+ Gold

- UPS: ~600–850 VA line-interactive

- OS: TrueNAS Community Edition (latest stable)

## Questions

1. Is this combination sound for TrueNAS CE? Any known gotchas?

2. ECC: does it work end-to-end on an ASRock Rack AM5 + Ryzen combo? Can anyone

confirm a specific board / CPU / RAM trio that’s known-good? (recommendations welcome)

3. For mostly cold archive with expansion in mind — mirror or RAIDZ1 to start

5. Anything I’m missing — SATA port count, need for an HBA, cooling,

I see that this setup would be around 1000 euro budget, which is ok for me, but let me know if you have any budget related suggestion. The idea is to have a open/unrestricted hardware with room to grow as the company grows. Thanks!

For pure SMB file sharing, you would have better results with a turnkey TrueNAS Mini. All the chassis integration has been done for you already, and you’ll have a reference for the system you’ll build afterwards. You can find used diskless ones for about the same budget.

With respect to your prospective build, you’re already starting with a server motherboard, so the only gotcha I can see is your power supply. You’ll want a server supply, so there’ll be enough power on the 5v rail to power your drives. You’ll have sufficient SATA ports on the motherboard to forego an HBA, which would require dedicated cooling.

For your pool topology, try to avoid RAIDZ1, especially with large drives, as failures during resilver leading to loss of the pool is all too common. If you have the budget for it, adding a fourth drive for RAIDZ2 is much more resilient against data loss. If you’re stuck with 3 drives, I would recommend a 2-way mirror with 1 spare.

The combination is sound… but you may look a few hardware generations back to DDR4 to lower costs compared to DDR5 ECC UDIMM.

So how many drives, now and in the future?
The Node 304 makes for a good and relatively quiet small NAS… BUT it requires a mini-ITX board. If you’re fine with a X10SDV, great; if you’re looking into socketed CPUs… :anxious_face_with_sweat:
The Node 804 is neither small nor quiet, but it takes micro-ATX boards. It also strongly favours 4 drives, 8 drives (including 4 now and 4 later), or 10 drives (all now!).

If this is a COMPANY NAS, requiring proper invoices and waranty, many usual advices for home builds will not apply.

This simple file storage setup does not use much CPU. However, if you plan to use many USB drives, I suggest going with the Intel route, as they have more reliable USB controllers. ASROCK’s motherboards are okay.

For a 12–24TB pool, 16GB of RAM should be more than enough (actually, even 8GB can work) for keep all critical metadata in memory to ensure fast directory enumeration and some data caching. More RAM is good, but it likely won’t bring meaningful benefits for this kind of load.

A 256GB boot disk is ok, anything 30GB+ will work. The power supply unit (PSU) is critical—buy a reputable brand. A poor-quality PSU will destroy hard drives.

RAIDZ fits very well for cold archive. record size 1M (or 512K) for 3 disk. 1M is good because it aligns with SMB io size very well. HBA card is good but considering you only need 3 disks, intel chip built-in SATA port should be good enough. Less extra parts less issue.

Be aware, that there is no supported way (anymore) to mount non ZFS filesystems. Data transfer would have to be done over the network from your USB drives connected to a client PC.

Also, while I understand the fascination with AMD and AM5, in a NAS, you are paying top dollar for no benefit. AM5 server boards are far and between, expensive compared to Intel boards because they are much less likely to be found on the refurb or “new old stock” market. Honestly, I think the AM5 server platforms are a bit of a letdown for me - in contrast to the AM5 consumer lineup which I love having as my gaming setup.

Validated ECC support you will only get with an EPYC 4004/5 CPU - not with a RYZEN.

RAIDZ1 for archival puposes might be ok, but IMO only if you have the data also elsewhere backed up. RAIDZ expansion for upgrades is possible - with caveats and the current issue of false reporting of the true capacity left on the pool.

As you are going with CE of TrueNAS, but for work, is support a concern?

If not, maybe consider used server gear (see my sig as an example)
