I’ll be hanging around and reading a lot. My profile shares a bit about why I’m here and yes - I am a bit of dumpster fire. I have an out of warranty system, that won’t be replaced, but before I can upgrade it, I need to create some backups. While I’m working on the backups, I plan to really dig into the documentation and will be reading the forum topics learning everything I haven’t learned in the past 6 years.
I love the interaction I’ve seen so far and I will be picking everyone’s brain if I don’t understand what I’m reading. My technical vocabulary is woefully small.
Your plan is, as far as I’m concerned, a good one! I’ve been using ZFS for almost a year now. If you are willing to dedicate the time to learning, you can learn a lot in a small amount of time.
There’s nothing like experimentation and experience, but theory (in the form of documentation) is the strongest foundation IMO. I was reading the docs, forums posts, Practical ZFS, OpenZFS man pages, and watching YouTube videos for probably half a year before I installed ZFS or TrueNAS. Then I moved to experimenting with ZFS on a cloud VM with block storage (via iSCSI) as a service before I committed to buying hardware and never looking back.
This is my favorite of the various ZFS communities. I think it’s the most vibrant, and there are some interesting and knowledgeable characters about!
