First steps with TrueNAS: Need help

Hi everyone,

First of all, I want to thank everyone who contributes to and helps people in this forum.

I’ve just started trying out TrueNAS. I currently have a server running Open Media Vault, and since I’ve acquired a new machine, I wanted to set it up with TrueNAS. This is my first time dealing with TrueNAS and I’m finding it a bit challenging to understand.

I’ve already installed the OS on my machine, and the first problem I encountered is that the disk where the operating system is installed apparently cannot be used as a data disk. My disk is 512GB and I don’t think the system needs that much. I should have partitioned the disk first before installing the OS.

I’m facing a similar situation with “Pools”. If I don’t have another disk, I can’t create a new pool, and if I can’t create a new pool, I can’t install plugins, etc.

I’ve added an extra disk to my machine, but I don’t know how to create a pool. I don’t need any kind of RAID for now, as I just want to use it as a media server, so data loss isn’t a major concern for me. As I gain more knowledge of the system, I would like to expand the NAS and get more out of it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Pretend it’s embedded in your NAS appliance, just like the nonvolatile storage in a flashable router. It serves its purpose to provide a functional device.

Pretend it’s “free”. Whether 128-GiB or 4-TiB, it’s a freebie that is permanently soldered in your NAS appliance.

Now you can focus on your actual storage drives. :slightly_smiling_face:

The GUI allows you to create a pool from a single drive. It will warn you, but you can still override it to continue.

Visit the Storage → Pools page.

I recommend you read the guides on the Docs website to understand an overview of basic processes.

Same as OMV, really…

Then what’s the point of TrueNAS and ZFS?
