Help SAS Board on SCALE

Hi There

I’m a newbie on truenas scale

I have a sas board with 2 Hd, about a 2 days ago, SCALE does not recognize thats HD anymore.

The sas board dont heat anymore, I think the board its permanently damaged, because theres no cooling fan for that board, and airflow case maybe It was not enough.

Is there any way to confirmed that board die ? And How to use the command sas2flash to list my board ? When I use it on bash, the output is “NOT FOUND”

Here is the board (DELL H200 LSI 9211-8i M1015 )

Sorry about my poor English Guys

Regards

If I haven’t just completely overlooked it the HBA is not listed there. It’s probably dead. You could try and reseat it or test it on another mainboard as the slot could also be faulty.

Yeah - test on another machine - but it doesn’t look good. Time for a new card, and make sure you put a fan on the chipset

I’m running a 9211-8i too - it’s a shame they don’t have temperature sensors.

Hey Guys

I test in another motherboard and Unfortunately the board is dead

I ll buy a new one , is that model good ? Or maybe I can look another board ? There s a two HD 4gb on that board

Regards

Where are you located in general and what is the availability for parts? It helps to know what kind of PCIe slots are available on your motherboard.

Hardware Guide section on storage controllers.

Hey there

Brazil , at the local market I can’t buy that kind of board ( too much expensive)

I can buy that board at Chinese market ( AliExpress)

My motherboard has a pic 16x slot and pci 1xslot

Regards

AliExpress may be counterfeit HBAs. You have to decide if you want to take the chance or pay more locally for known good models.

The other issue is all the HBA cards need good cooling. The documentation for the models suggested is usually 200 lfpm (linear feet per minute) from Broadcom. The HBA cards are designed to be in a server with a lot of air flowing over them from the fans. You may have to add a fan and a bracket over the HBA heat sink.

One example of added on blower fan

Thanks for the reply

Maybe on the local market I ll buy a counterfeit Chinese board for more money , that’s the problem

Is there any way to check if it’s not a counterfeit board ?

Regards

I don’t think there is an easy way to check. The cards could report fine using tools such as sas2flash, sas3flash or storcli and look fine physically but fail shortly after. You might be better off attaching the drives to the motherboard ports. I am not sure if your L2ARC (read cache) is doing much for you and having 32Gb of RAM. You should be able to remove the L2ARC from your pools without harming the data. Those aren’t pool critical

Thanks for the Reply

a pci commom sata board expansion look a good solution ? (no SAS board)
SATA Port Multipliers - I think is not a good solution  lol

For right now I’ll remove the read cache , but when my pools area full, Will be a big problem

CMR HDD at local Market is too expensive , We talk about US$300,00 ~$400,00 for 8 TB (for mirror x2), but maybe there’ll the only way.

Option 2, I ll buy a chinese sas board with a FAN and dont leave my NAS ON 24 Hours per day , just switch on When a need copy or read files
