How does this list check out?

About to build a machine for TrueNAS (first time even tinkering with nas/server so pretty green here. It’s Going to be a backup for documents and pictures/home videos mostly. Nothing critical as pictures are also backed up on external drive as well as on the computer.

However, I will also be running a few VM/dockers for Home Assistant, an MQTT broker, possibly a scada server and eventually something for PFsense/OPNsense.

Ive got a x99 MATX MOBO with a xeon E5 2698 V3 CPU [16 core 32 thread 3.2 mhz (3.6 boost)] and 32gb of ecc ddr4 ram on its way.

MoBo supports:
sata 6Gb/s x6
2 NVME SSD
4 channel DDR4
1 pcie x 16
1 pcie x4

I plan on using 1 nvme as boot and one probably for read/write cach
ill have a sdd dedicated for vm/docker
as far as the NAS side, probably 3 10TB NAS HDDs
Array cant be much larger in terms of number of drives due to limited space in the shallow 3u case i have to use.

Still need CPU cooler and will have to add a GPU of some sort as no onboard graphics. (something in case i decide to use this for movies??)

don’t bother with the cache. Leave the NVMe for the apps pool as a mirror. Boot from a normal SSD

Exactly what motherboard do you have? Does it really support ECC RAM?

As for the drives, I agree with @NugentS with using a normal SSD as a boot drive, save the M.2 NVMe slots for the apps pool. Then the last three drives, you didn’t say Stripe, RAIDZ1, Mirrors, for the layout. What are you considering?

Is this a rackmount chassis? I guess I’m really just curious if there will be good airflow since you also made this statement:

So it has me questioning exactly what case make/model?

Airflow is a major thing to consider, a hot system tends to be unstable or prematurely fails.

Cheep china special MoBo so probably not…
Probably will end up with Raid Z1

The chassis is a rackchoice “front IO” and is 12" deep. deepest i could run was 14" deep if i didnt have the IO/power on the back.

Airflow is a concern and can/will hack as many fans on it as i need. wont hurt my feelings to make a few more holes.
