I have a used Dell poweredge 430 w/PERC H730 Can I use this w/TruNAS??
It will work like a champ. I am running it on a R610
Not reccomended. I don’t believe the H730 can be flashed into a “proper” HBA. It is and will remain a RAID controller. Yes it has an HBA mode that many say works, until it doesn’t.
If you do use it then make sure that its flashed with the latest firmware.
Your choice - I wouldn’t
In short: Strongly recommented to replace the H730 by a HBA (330, I think).
Then you can certainly use the PowerEdge with TrueNAS.
I have Truenas installed on my R430 with a a H730. and it works like a charm.
Disks configured as shown in the attached image.
So what?
The H730 is a RAID Card. Its not reccomended. I didn’t say it won’t work. It may well work, but evidence here suggests it will break eventually
So nothing, just making a statement…
the H730 is fine..?
is there evidence of this card or ones like it in particular breaking or is this just more of the typical sentiment…?
the biggest problem with it is the battery, which will probably be dead by now, just remove it… ZFS doesn’t need the write cache (that is disabled in HBA mode anyways)
The h730 works perfectly. I have a dell T330 with x8 16TB drives under TrueNAS. The h730 firmware from dell let’s you put it in hba mode and pass the disks through. Been running for years and nothing even close to an issue.

I took a leap of faith (my main form of exercise) and pulled the trigger today! Such a smooth install process!!
Looking on the TrueNAS web site for something like a training manual for noob first timers.
Any links or further advice will be greatly appreciated.
p.s. Wish me LUCK!!
Thanks,

As with everything valuable you want to store, make sure you keep a validated backup. This would be true even if you had chosen to follow the advice to stay clear of raid cards.
I think when I originally setup my NAS I spent a dozen or so hours reading every resource on the old forums. I quickly picked-up that everything insisted on tried & true hardware (or as I understood it at the time; old crap) & was disappointing that veteran posters weren’t excited about the bleeding edge.
…I’ve come around to seeing things their way after a few years
Uhh, anyway - yeah check out the “Resources” category on the forum & read anything that you might think is somewhat interesting.
NAS requires such low spec computers pretty much anything will do - until recently my main NAS was a dual core 4GB dell poweredge. I have since installed NAS servers of various incarnations on Dell workstations and then a T410, with and without the PERC cards.
all smooth operators.
you should give it a try and it will likely be fine.
