Hi, so I just built my first NAS and I want to install Plex on that thing. I DO NOT want the apps to reside on the spinning drives in there. I have an nvme where TrueNAS Scale is installed on. I looked at partitioning the nvme and I have no idea when it comes to linux, so I spent a weekend and failed. How can I get this infernal machine to install apps on the boot pool or is there an easier way to partition the nvme than the tutorial you find everywhere?
A few PSAs to prevent the answers I have read all weekend.
NO I don’t want to install an SSD for the apps because I am all out of room and SATA ports.
YES I know you should not partition the boot pool disk and I DO NOT care!
NO I don’t want to install it on a spinning drive.
If you still want to keep the unsafety way, take a look on this recent thread:
despite, if you want to keep a bit safer / a lot easier strategy:
buy a cheap used 2.5" SSD (32,64,128gb) + SATA to USB adapter (prob less than 10€ all), and install Scale on that connected via USB… so your NVME is free for apps (will be striped, so take care about backup)
buy a good MLC usb, 20-30€ for the boot
if you have a pci-ex slot, you can buy a pci-ex-NVME adapter for less than 5€, and put another disk on it
