Ionstall usb headache

i have downloaded trueNAS iso and used Balena etcher to copy it to my usb drive, this goes well BUT!!! when i go to install it on the system i want to use it on it states that the usb needs formatting, i try formatting and it fails as saus it is wright protected…what can i do??? its got me stumped now as i cant even use things like disk magic or disk management to wipe the usb drive clean

I misurunderstood, or you tried to install TN in the same device used for the installer?? Leaving aside that use an USB stick as boot device Is not optimal/raccomended, you need at least 2 (1 with the installer, 1 as target)…

i tried boot install on the other pc to try after, it seems that the pc im using has the usb ports but theres no usb boot option on the thing in bios…so looks like im going to have to go the old cd way for boot install

What mainboard Is? Odd, not impossible but odd, i would give a try to check if the BIOS Is loading eg. only legacy boot drive and your Stick Is uefi or viceversa

has no legacy on it i found out, boards a MS-7613

Old mainboard but fully capable to boot from USB

More probably Is only legacy, in your place i would try to flash the stick as MBR with rufus, afaik balena etcher can’t do that.

i got it, on start up theres a section that says press esc for boot menu, the usb was on there, was not seen in oast as not long showing on screen as it boots up, its now installing
