I have two EE 24.10.3 systems.
Well primary is still on 24.10.2, will be upgraded to 24.10.3 after todays backups.
My setup is quite simple :
Primary NAS just powered up once a week, to “rsync fetch” backup data from my Linux server OS & NFS disks. And then primary “ZFS Snapshot” data to secondary.
Afaik no installed APP’s (as in i have never knowingly installed one)
No fileshares
As you can see from the above, it’s not for “fancy features” i need to switch.
EE 24.10.3 is doing fine by me, but is it time … ?? When do 24.xx go EOS ?
Is FT 25.04 stable enough for me to switch ?
Are there any thing i have to watch out for ?
I stumbled across some mentions about IXVolumes, but think it was if you had APP’s installed
If there will be another FT release. Goldeye is due in october and my guess is that development will mainly shift to get it into beta.
There will propably only be another FT update if iX finds major problems with the .2 release and/or there are security fixes that can’t be delayed to the gold eye release.
If you don’t use vm’s or apps i’d say it’s perfectly fine to udpate. I don’t use vms or the buildin apps and fangtooth has been very stable for the basic nas portion of the system.
This, and the wisdom (or lack thereof) of that release cycle has been discussed at length elsewhere.
Generally, a release goes EOL when its successor reaches .2, which would mean that 24.10 is EOL now, and 24.04 would have been EOL with 24.10.2. iX made, and broke,[1] promises that 24.04 would be supported for a year after 24.10 came out.
Of course, unless you’re a paying customer, “support” is kind of a nebulous thing anyway.

It’s up to you to decide if you wish to be more or less current
I use my systems mainly for backup and serving a few files and I like to stay more or less current but not on the edge and not so much Beta testing. I do have a few apps File browser, Tailscale, StorJ. but that is it. I have no VM’s and no custom apps so all the current mess with VM’s really does not concern me.
Generally for my systems it does not really matter what version I am on unless the version I am on will actually break auto updating apps or something else in the future for some reason. I do try to wait until the point 2 release is out (xx.xx.2) which it now is (25.04.2) as I consider anything prior a beta release. Having said that I will use a point 1 release occasionally.
One thing to consider that many don’t is if yor systems fall too many versions behind then updating to the most current may become a royal pain and take a lot longer than necessary.
I have currently upgraded both of my systems to 25.04.2 and everything for me went fine. It took about 6 minutes to update one system from 24.10.3 and about 10 minutes total.
I think some other storage systems I used to use still have a randomly semi annual firmware with security/hot patches randomly released as necessary in between.
