We have a X10 at work that support is EOL for. I want to migrate it to Scale from Core/Enterprise. It’s a single head unit, so no fancy HA to complicate things. I’m trying to get either a serial console, or into the IPMI. We’ve had this since new, but we never setup the IPMI. I can connect to it on 192.168.100.100, but only on SSH and I don’t know the credentials to log in. Is there a way to do a factory reset on the IPMI from the motherboard? Alternatively, I could serial into the system and do the install that way, but I can’t seem to get a console connected. Is the standard console on the left or the right? I’ve connected to the port on the right successfully, but it seems like a dedicated low level hardware management connection, not the regular console.
ipmitool mc reset cold
Could not open device at /dev/ipmi0 or /dev/ipmi/0 or /dev/ipmidev/0: No such file or directory
Have you done sudo -s first to elevate?
Also I missed the last word cold look above.
I ran this as root.
What version of TN are you running?
Are you running the command from a shell within TN?
FreeBSD based Enterprise 13.0-U6.7
I’m SSHing in, but i tried it from the shell in the GUI with the same result.
Ok worth a shot. Must be a compatibility issue with your mobo.
Yeah, I’m looking for iXsystems official guidance if at all possible.
Hello @gedavids
Happy to help with your OOS system here.
For basic serial console access so that you may install SCALE this is the appropriate port to plug the cable into.
You should use the serial settings 115200 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, no flow control
- Switch to the system console mode by entering: $%^0
- Press Enter twice after typing the characters. The normal system console is displayed. When you reboot, you can watch it POST and go into the BIOS to modify the boot order to allow you to boot from a SCALE ISO and install normally.
Couple of other key bits of information.
There is a recovery dongle already installed in the back of your X series. You should remove that dongle and replace it with the SCALE ISO burned to a new one.
IntelRCSetup->PCH->USB->USB Port #1 Disable
Advanced->USB Configuration->USB Mass Storage Driver Support (turn this on if it is disabled by default)
Ha no wonder ipmitool wasn’t working.
I just tried this and the serial connection appears hung after I entered those characters.
EDIT: Oh wait, I enabled the serial console thinking that was what I was missing and I bet that has messed this up.
Did you figure it out?
I’ve been waiting for a backup to finish before I rebooted to see if I got a console. Stand by.
I got BIOS drive c: is disk0
and that’s it.
I think you just missed it. Try and reboot again while the console cable is plugged in and you have the serial terminal already open/configured.
I did see the BIOS POST screen briefly, but I was was expecting all the TrueNAS boot up messages after that. Is that not how it works?
That could be a config issue in CORE (because you never setup/used IPMI, we can do that later), but we’re trying to boot into the SCALE ISO installer anyway, so that is what you should be seeing.
