Hello,
First, a disclaimer that I’ve been a Windows sysadmin for 30+ years, and I’ve played around with Linux, I’m by no means ‘experienced’ with Linux at all. And, sorry for the long post.
I built my first NAS back in 08/2025 with the following specs
CASE: Jonsbo N3
MB: CWWT CW-AT-10G-8P (knockoff purchased via Amazon)
CPU: Intel i3-N305
BootDrive: Pny CS1030 1TB M.2 in nvme0n1 slot
RAM: 32GB (Crucial CT16G52C42U5 DDR5 5600MHz SO-DIMM
HDD: 2x Seagate IronWolf 12TB 3.5in SATA 6Gb/s 7200 RPM 256MB Cache
TrueNAS SCALE: 25.04.1 (updated through 25.10.3.1)
From the start, everything seemed good. However, I was working late several nights ago, and the NAS, which sits on my desk, shutoff then immediately powered back up. Some googling lead me to the last rebootcommand, which showed the following:
truenas_admin@truenas01:/home/truenas_admin$ last reboot

From what I gather, the ‘still running’ reboots indicate other power cycles.
I was I’ve been pretty regular about applying updates when they come out. October 23 was when I updated to 25.04.2.5, and on Oct 30 I updated to 25.04.2.6. Based on the fact that most of the restarts appeared to happen late at night, I never noticed them before.
Since things looked ‘better’ before 10/30, I went back to the 25.04.2.5 boot image, removed and reseated the memory and power cables, and the box ran for about 2 days, then recycled again, then again about a day later. That was also when I noticed that a clean reboot would make all the outstanding ‘still running’ entries all get updated to the time of the clean reboot. That led me to look closer at the entries and noticed several consecutive entries with the same end time, which I assume indicates the issue went farther back than I thought, but wasn’t happening quite as often.
Again, being a true noob at Linux, I was hoping someone could point me to some logs I’m not familiar with that may shed light on what’s going on here. journalctl -b -1tends to end with something like
May 22 01:30:00 truenas01 systemd[1]: Starting sysstat-collect.service - system activity accounting tool...
May 22 01:30:00 truenas01 systemd[1]: sysstat-collect.service: Deactivated successfully.
May 22 01:30:00 truenas01 systemd[1]: Finished sysstat-collect.service - system activity accounting tool.
But those messages are several minutes/an hour+ before the recycle.
Are there any other logs or things within TN that I can check to see what may be going on here? Any settings I can add that will help get more diagnostics at the time of the power cycles?
CPU temps tend to sit around 40C, and harddrives at 36C-38C.
Thanks in advance,
Trace Wilson
