Moving disks to new chassis/system?

A few months ago I decided to give TrueNAS a try.
I purchased a mini PC, a few drives, and a USB attached drive caddy.
It has been working out “ok” except for all the reasons USB attached drives are not recommended.
So I’m going to build a proper NAS.
As I understand it (please correct me if I’m wrong) I can backup my config and restore it on the new system and just plug my drives in and should be good to go.
Is there a guide for doing something like this?
I figure it must be a common thing that people do.

Is there a

I should add that I have one pool with one vdev (raidz2) and syncthing is the only app that i’ve added.

That is true.

You could use the TrueNAS Documents. If you use the AI and enter something like “backup truenas configuration” then it gives you the steps.

One thing that is generally a manual step, re-configuring the network port by using the console command line.

In general, the network port of the old server will be different, (different PCIe address, different vendor, etc…), from the new server that it won’t automatically configure. Thus, manual changes are needed via the console’s TUI, (Text User Interface).

It is always better to have a backup of your configuration.

You won’t need to reinstall TrueNAS.

Just transfer the boot drive and data disks and you should be good to go.

I changed my PC case lately and all I needed to do was to just transfer all the drives. I even changed the motherboard a year ago without reinstalling :slightly_smiling_face:
