New Build Advice

Hi All, I’m looking to replace my ageing setup, I plan on using Sagittarius 8 bay chassis, looking for recommendations on hardware please.

Replacing the following devices. Ideally I need a low power solution but with ability to transcode UHD content. I’m based in UK and budget is flexible ideally around £1000 excluding case.

Synology DS1019+ 5 x 6TB WD Red, NVME Cache

  • Plex
  • Docker

HP Elitebook 800 G3 Mini

  • Proxmox - Running Homeassistant, AdGaurd (LXC Container)

Hardware Goals

  • Low power
  • Hardware Transcoding
  • Dual 2.5GB / 10GB NIC
  • Support for 8 Drives - HBA Card or onboard
  • MATX MB Due to case size

So far I’ve been looking at the following

ASRock X570D4U-2L2T Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
AMD Ryzen 7 5700G 3.8 GHz 8-Core Processor
Corsair Vengeance LPX 128 GB (4 x 32 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
Corsair RM650 (2023) 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

All suggestions and recommendations welcome

For better transcoding, look into Intel rather than AMD.

You don’t want to run ECC RAM?

Definately this

Yea, I overlooked this…

Thanks for Intel suggestions, I’m struggling to find an Intel MATX Board with same feature set as AMD but I’ll keep searching, any suggestions welcome.

This is an all-in-one board with 12SATA, 410G Ethernet, Hardware Remote Management etc. CPU is soldered on board, you only need to add RAM.
Purposely built for servers.

No iGPU for transcoding, and idles at 60 W…

What about an AsRockRack E3C246D2U-2T? (If the UHD630 from Cascade Lake CPUs support the 4K transcoding you want.)

That’s cheap!

Wow, decent board for the money. Once I’m home I’ll look for CPU/RAM that supports. iGPU, ECC & isn’t to power hungry :joy:

Matching CPU (with DDR4 ECC UDIMM): Core i3-8100/9100 (64 GB RAM, no -F for iGPU), Xeon E-2100G/2200G (128 GB RAM, and more than 4 cores)

Thanks, Found the below. Looking i3 as I believe this will be sufficient for my needs and if I need to I can always upgrade to Xeon.

MB: Asrock E3C246D4U2-2T - £150
CPU: Intel i3-9100 - £30-£50
RAM: SK hynix 32GB DDR4-2400MT ECC - £50 each

Right think I’m spec’d

Case: Sagittarius 8-bay NAS
MB: Asrock E3C246D4U2-2T - £150
CPU: Intel i3-9100 - £30-£50
RAM: SK hynix 32GB DDR4-2400MT ECC - £50 each
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i (Low Profile to fit case)
PSU: CORSAIR RM Series RM650 Fully Modular 80PLUS Gold ATX
HBA: LSI 9300-8i with 2 X SSF-8643 to 4 x SATA
OS Drive: WD Blue SN580 1TB SSD

Haven’t decided on drives yet, probably looking at 4 x 12 or 16TB SATA leaving 4 bays remaining for expansion.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I’ll update with how I get on once parts are ordered.

The board has 8 SATA ports. Why a HBA?
